Honestly, Louisiana food is overrated by those of you who live there.

lol no. Most places have good food
Louisiana has a unique ability to marry seafood and seasoning that no one else does.
But Florida has some amazing Cuban food. Texas BBQ is world famous. Mississippi and Alabama have some of the best soul food on the planet. Kansas City and Memphis can put it down on the grill as well.
Everywhere has a uniqueness.
Except for the Yankees and Midwest. They suck at cooking

Everyone has their regional foods that are unique and delicious for what it is. But if you’re looking for Louisiana cuisine outside of Louisiana, you’ll be disappointed most of the time

For you guys that travel a lot or have lived in numerous places, what’s your opinion on food outside of Louisiana?
I moved to Texas 25 years ago and couldn't be happier. Mexican/TexMex suits me just fine and I still can get cajun/creole when I want or just cook it myself.
FYI, I'm cooking red beans with Best Stop tasso and andouille tomorrow.

So good that everyone is leaving the State for better jobs?

When you say LA, you mean New Orleans & Lafayette?

Louisiana does one thing well. And that’s it.

I’d say no.
Now are you asking is LA food and style of spices one of my favorite? Then yes.
I have been to cities in Cali Washington where I can literally get just about any ethnicity of food cooked to perfection. Meaning I would rate the food 5 stars without a second thought.
Now I absolutely love Louisiana and think the Cajun breakfasts and cuisine in LA is top notch but the smaller the town down here, the shittier the food unless your getting food from a Louisiana speciality butcher and cooking it at home.

No, I’ve been to several different states where the food is just as good.

Villahermosa Mexico has some pretty damn good cuisine. Different than any other Mexican i have had. Lots of fresh seafood also since it lies on the southernmost coast of the GOM.
ETA - I say this as one who lives and grew up in the heart of Cajun Country.

We traveled up to Niagara Falls for vacation one year, Cooperstown, DC, and back down home, and all I can tell you is I hit the first Popeyes I could get to so I could have some food with any kind of flavor.

Whenever I am away from Louisiana for long periods of time, I miss the food. A lot of other cuisines aren’t bad by any means. Moreover, some are fantastic. But they are just not the same.

Aside from BBQ (brisket), chicken fried steak and TexMex/Mexican food, Texas food is mediocre at best.
Louisiana food blows out any other food I’ve had.

For the most part - yes.
In my travels, only Thailand, Rome, and high end restaurants have impressed.
Otherwise, you generally don’t leave Louisiana to find better food options.
There’s not much that Louisiana does exceptionally well.
Food, Football, and Festivals are the exceptions.

Foods like gumbo and etouffee, generally yes.
Other foods like Asian, BBQ, TexMex, New Mexican, Italian, no.

Yes, the only food worth eating is Canjun/Creole
Posted on 2/18/24 at 8:34 am to Gee Grenouille
No. The seafood in New England is legit. Different, but good.

I think it all depends on what type of food you eat and where.
My wife is from rural Minnesota (farmland). There are a few instances where I have discovered their food is better than ours.
Meat - while I'm not talking about sausage, etc - their quality of beef and pork is much better than what we find in our local restaurants and grocery stores. I am not sure if that is because there is so much farmland in that part of the country- but just getting a basic hamburger at a local restaurant you find the quality of the beef superior than in Louisiana.
Baked Goods - whether it's one of my wife's family members or a bakery they have fantastic baked goods. Cinnamon rolls, scones, along with some of their traditional goods (lefse, krumakake) I don't think I have ever had one that wasn't fantastic
Fast food - you all might laugh at this one - just something as simple as a trip to Dairy Queen or McDonald's you'll find that the restaurant is very clean, fantastic customer service, and your food is always how it should be - unfortunately in Louisiana is almost never the case

100 percent. Louisiana, hands down has the best food in the states. Also, absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt, never, and I do mean never, eat at a place claiming to be Louisiana cooking outside of Louisiana.

I love any heavily spiced cuisine, so many African and Asian cuisines are just as good as Louisiana to me, just different
