n lieu of necklaces, Freret will emphasize reusable, consumable, and handmade items, including Freret-branded hats, fanny packs, sunglasses, collapsible dog bowls, coloring books, tote bags, wooden doubloons, and the krewe’s signature hand-decorated masks.

Krewe of Freret to ban plastic beads for 2025

Hermes, Toth, and Rex your up next on the clock to making New Orleans an emissions zero city.

Didn’t see this but it sounds like Feret is following Muses lead. Now instead of a thousand women not working for months at a time because they are painting shoes we are going to a generation of men doing the same to masks thanks to Feret.

frick me. As the father of two younger kids, I don’t want more stuffed animals or trinkets and shite. Damn it I hate carrying these things back from the parade!

It's easy to poke fun, but when you see how much of that shite gets pulled from the storm drains, this is a good idea.

Why not just ban throws altogether then? I mean, those can get in the storm drain as well.

I have no problem with this. It's a private krewe making a rule, not the city government. If you don't like it, leave the krewe.

That being said, it's stupid.

Seems like the mask thing has never really caught on, we’ll see if this does it … but I don’t think so

These will be replaced by teams of strong, diverse trans-women.

Dump the tractors and go back to mules pulling your floats. Ban folks from flying or driving in for the parades to save the carbon footprint. Don't go half arse go all the way. Brave hypocrites.

I love that the people complaining about this are the same ones that say they hate Mardi Gras and would never attend a parade.

People who actually go realize how many beads are on the ground because no one actually wants or catches them anymore.

I don't know what other types of throws people are using and the likelihood of them clogging up storm drains.

I do know that when people clean out the storm drains though, they pull out a shite ton of beads that jumble together and catch debris and cause large blockages.

I do think it would make for more creative throws and a better parade-going experience.

Maybe. Maybe not.

All of the non-bead throws are expensive, so you'll have riders throwing less and less.

I ride in Thoth and most of our float has reduced the amount of beads thrown over the years, but it's a long route and beads are still kind of necessary to fill in some gaps on the route.

The ride will get pretty boring if I am holding up shirts or something else for long periods of time just to fill the time.

It’s the poli-cessed folks who have been conditioned to equate any idea that might be termed “progressive” as evil. See some of the over-the-top follow up floats about having “brave trans people” pulling the floats or banning people flying in to town to save carbon emissions.

The ironic thing is I would argue that this idea to ban plastic bead is really more about conservation -Ie the protection and management of the environment and natural resources - which I always learned to be from the same root word as “conservative”.

FWIW, here in Mobile, Krispy Kreme has an annual program where people exchange beads for doughnuts that’s been going on for at least 20 years it seems. I don’t know if they repackage them or otherwise recycle them somehow.

Only the beads? I think they should go all the way and ban any and all plastics from their krewe. You know, for the environment.

Because they're shite beads. If they threw good beads there would never be any on the ground.
