What years? As a ‘23 F250 driver……sort of concerning.

You may need to look into if some tailgate cage guards will help as deterrents.

We were in the area a couple months ago with our F-350. We parked it in my buddy's shop and rented something else to drive. Someone had their truck broken into in the parking lot at La Cantera while we were getting dinner.

It's ridiculous how easy it is to frick with these trucks. It's even more ridiculous how often it happens in San Antonio.

Lock your tailgate.

Tailgate locks automatically when the doors are locked. Break the bed cover, and use the manual release in the bed to drop the tailgate. I've had to manually drop the tailgate this way, as I stated (obviously without wrecking my bed cover, but the thieves smashed it).

What bed cover? I have a Diamondback HD and I've never heard of anyone getting through one of them.

They smashed it until they got one side off the rail, which got them access to the inside of the tailgate. You just have to get it out of the track. They also appeared to have unscrewed very basic stabilizing screws for the rail. The underside mounts were fine, which they couldn't access. I can probably re-track it, I think. Always attack the weak point. It's not the cover, it's the track, apparently.

4 hours of labor and ancillary electronics was $2k?

Guy said that finding the housing is easy - but then finding the other stuff that has to go in it was difficult. Paid hundreds of dollars to locators to find the parts. I guess that once the connectors, modules, and other stuff gets found and purchased, it all adds up quickly.

You can use downed street lights for that. Both the metal halide and HPS ones.

Price for each tail light assembly is approx $1700.

We've officially jumped the shark on tech in vehicles. That should be $120.

Cost of repairs is The main reason automobile insurance has sky rocketed

So you can't replace them yourself?

That labor is absolutely ridiculous. I own a body shop. Using a 2023 F250 as an example, each taillight pays/costs 0.3 labor hours to install. So, 0.6 labor hours total @ $65/hr(dealerships and mechanic shops labor is much more per hour, but shouldn't be more than $150-$180) comes out to $39.00 total labor. I currently use a 3rd party company, that is mobile, to do my calibrations. They charge way too much, but they would still only be around $1000 for the calibrations.

Side note: I've got a 2016 F250 and this thread reminded me that I noticed moisture in them the other day. I just ordered 2 from Ford, and they list for $56.11 & $57.15. No calibrations needed either.

Coworker just had his F150 tailgate stolen at the airport in Brownsville, Texas while he was out of town. He had an open bed, no cover. They didn't touch the taillights! Trucks in that area are disappearing at a rapid pace, headed across the border.

BLIS was one of the features that I made certain wasn't on the vehicle before buying my 2019 F250.

Also, I usually drive my wife's Expedition when going to San Antonio as I want to avoid the hassle of dealing with a stolen vehicle.

Every time I've been there someone's truck was broken into. One whole F250 was stolen.

I’m convinced these part theft trends and their perps are well known by your local car remarketers and parts warehouses.

Thefts pay them double. Part goes up, service goes up, insurance cost goes up. Everyone in the car industry wins and their books grow.

No wonder car insurance has gone sky high. That's crazy.

In contrast, I have a 1st Gen Tundra and one of the back taillight housings developed a crack. I asked my mechanic to fix it, but he called me and said the dang parts were going to be about $175 -- and he was outraged about that price. I covered the crack with clear packing tape, and it's worked fine for at least 15 years now.

I really don’t know how/why insurance companies pay those prices.

They don't. They burn the candle at both ends and get a discount from the installers. Insurance companies screw body shops over just as much as they screw the consumer over.
