have no idea how people making less than 120k or so household wise buy things now.
Wife and I are at about $200K or so. We finally decided we aren't financing anything anymore. Paying interest on anything other than the house and having montly payments just doesn't work for us anymore. Cars are almost paid off and that's a wrap for financing. House is at 3% so I don't see a need to hurry and pay it off, but we are planning on paying it off early.

I am a hobby woodworker. Made our entire bedroom set (bed frame, two night stands and dresser). I never had a bed that didn’t squeak or rock when you get up in the middle of the night to take a piss but I accomplished it with our bed. Dresser has an inconspicuous hidden drawer for a few of my guns. It’s all made of solid wood. No veneer or plywood even except the back of the nightstands and drawers that you don't see.

You should just assume that everything has gone up the last few years. Nothing surprises me anymore when I hear insane prices

After the flood, got my folks a real nice dining room table and chairs for only $300 on FB.

I continue to buy pieces of solid hardwood furniture from Clore Furniture in Madison Virginia. The prices have gone up, and I don't begrudge their workers getting more for the excellent products they produce.
When it comes to chairs and sofas, we reupholster what we have. (Just like my Father did. He had a chair he liked, and he redid it as needed.)

It all crap and super expensive.
Because of this and my wife wanted farmhouse style stuff I decided to make my own Kitchen table, Entertainment center, coffee, and end tables.

With careful shopping and patience you save a ton of money furnishing a house.
And a can of paint and/or change of knobs. Wife just got a dining room table in the shape she wanted for $150 and made it the color she wanted.
It reminds me of the HGTV shows when the irrational wife complains about "the color" or "that light fixture." Ladies, if your husband can't change a light fixture, you haven't married a man.

Good furniture has always been expensive imo
Particle board
Subpar fabrics
As seen with every other product out there, it is created to fail, not last.

Would you shop at a store called Unpainted Huffhines?

My grandfather started a furniture store in south Arkansas after the end of WW2, my parents took over it from him, and I was going to take over it from them until I decided I didn't want to sell furniture the rest of my life.
The markup in furniture is high. Things have probably changed in the 30 years since I've been out of the business but back in the 80's and 90's the markup typically looked like the following.
(Wholesale Price + Freight Cost) * 3.5 = MSRP
(Wholesale Price + Freight Cost) * 2 = Everyday Price
((Wholesale Price + Freight Cost) * 2) * .9 (or whatever) = Sale Price
Most furniture stores use a cost code on their price tags. The cost code allows the salesperson to see the cost of the item without revealing it to the buyer. Our cost code was based on wethankyoz where the w=1, e=2, t=3, etc... So an item that we paid $375 for would have a cost code of TKA. We would have marked it as MSRP of $1323 with our everyday price being $750. Pay cash, you would get 10% off the $750. If we had a labor day sale and advertised everything 25% off, it would be 25% off the $750 or $562.50. Our gross profit from the sale price would be $187.50 which amounts to 50% gross profit.

quote:Farmhouse seems to be the in-style type furniture right now. Personally, I don't like the lack of color when everything in the house in gray, beige, white, white-washed, destressed looking. Maybe because I was raised in a home with formal settings and dark Mahagony/walnut/cherry wood antique furniture.
wanted farmhouse style stuff
