PETA -- that’s People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- wants to change things up at the popular Mullet Toss at the Flora-Bama in one crucial way. The organization is calling for only fake fish to be tossed across the state line at the annual event that sees beachgoers throwing mullet between Florida and Alabama. “Every fish whose body is treated like a hacky sack at this event was once an individual who had a life precious to them, swam free, had feelings, and didn’t want to die,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk for a news release. “PETA wants to help modernize the moment with fabulous fake fish that no one had to die for.” The news release states that today PETA sent a letter to the Flora-Bama Lounge urging that the dead fish that are tossed at the popular event each year be replaced with reusable rubber ones. PETA says it will donate the rubber fish and also is offering to cater the event with “tasty vegan fish sandwiches that spare animals a violent death and don’t come with the mercury, iodine, sewage, and other contaminants that real fish contain.” We’ll let you know what the folks at the Flora-Bama have to say about this proposal. The next Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss happens this coming weekend, Friday, April 26, though Sunday, April 28, at the Flora Bama, at 17401 Perdido Key Drive at the Alabama-Florida line. After the event, the fish are given to Alligator Alley in Summerdale for the alligators to eat. Copyright 2024 WALA. All rights reserved.
