Kids that take up trades & become successful are a different breed, too. Usually forced down that path due to circumstance & survival.
Most kids don’t want to climb around an attic in the summer while their friends are on summer break at the beach or pool.
Go get the degree especially if there’s any scholarship involved. You have to be illiterate to not qualify for TOPS

Mark Cuban had an interesting take on college degrees recently. He actually believes the market will swing back in favor of liberal arts majors. He thinks AI will replace many STEM and finance jobs. Not sure I agree but it was an interesting take.

If I had gone to trade school right out of high school I'd be better off now. I wasted my time for 4 or 5 years at first. Once I figured out what I wanted to do I was a 4.0 student. I love my desk job but could have saved/made more money taking a different route to it.

He’s 14/15. How the frick is he supposed to know this already?
I get that and I am not saying he needs to know for sure what he wants to do. Said another way if we get late into his junior year or senior year and he doesn't have an idea I don't think it's wise to push him to go to college just to go figure it out. I like the idea of a gap year for him like other folks have mentioned here.

For the sake of my argument I won't touch on if colleges are "indoctrinating" people or not, but just because you are being instructed in a way does not mean you have to adopt their way of thinking. If anything it would be beneficial to his critical thinking skills to be introduced to other viewpoints. There has been a movement on both sides of the political spectrum that their tender ears cannot and will not hear any dissenting voices and it's childish. So many these days want to live in a bubble. Also, you better watch out for the indoctrinating going on in the trade school, your boy will be chewing tobacco in no time.

Yep. You won't even get an interview for a professional or management job without a college degree.

We don’t push my niece. She’s still in elementary school. So, we have time. But she mentions things like going to culinary school. We will support whatever she wants to do.
There are high schools where you can get your diploma and an Associate’s in 4 years and one of the associate degrees is in culinary. That may be in option if she wants to stay on this path.

Pay for him to go to at least one bigger camp too. Can definitely build confidence going against the more recruited kids. They aren’t all that.

Gap year might be okay, but he probably won’t know what he wants to be even after that.
That’s what college is for especially the first two years. Take survey courses and move in a particular direction.
If he doesn’t attend college and goes the trade route, what then? He’ll be forced to pick a singular career at 19/20 instead of getting a wide ranging education that can prepare him for any number of fields.
Obviously ensure he’s focusing on degrees that lead to jobs and good salaries.

Have him spend 4 years in one of the services become a ATC get a job when he is done go bill at 21 years old he can go to school then DEBT FREE! Nothing wrong with education but he shouldn’t go into debt for it.

Generally speaking, this is my point. It's BS but I got one because you are "supposed" to. Not once has my BS college degree gotten me a job. I've been in the same field of work for about 20 years. My point being I make a decent living and owe none of it to my "degree". I don't believe it to be a requirement like it was in the past.

you are not getting an interview for any management or pretty much any decent job unless you have one.
you can start in the bottom at a company....still not getting that management position without the degree.
things have changed and pretty much every door is closed without a degree except things like the trades.
Go try and get hired at a bank without a degree and see how far you get. hell go try and get a management job at a retail store....good luck without it.

Manufacturing equipment might not have been the best word to use but a family member owns a welding shop that makes custom pieces for a very large manufacturer. There is always something that is needing to be built and/or customized.
