My father-in-law’s brother was coming back up the ramp, but the truck had a tricky clutch….he couldn’t get it in gear and the truck rolled back, completely submerged. Only the antenna was visible. When others came they would let them know where the truck was. Within 30-45 minutes two drunk rednecks with magnets and diving gear showed up and went under to retrieve all of their work tools.

Memorial Day & 7/4 weekend are classics for boat ramp follies. Most Saturday afternoons in the summer you can sit at my lift (directly across from the backdown and witness untold hilarity. Boats half up on dock, boats sideways on trailer, boats halfway off trailer, yelling is a given.

My girlfriend’s in high school that I took water skiing, fishing or to the camp could pull and launch a boat properly. Taught by me.

Working a clutch and a shift on the column of my pickup truck. Girls from 15-18 years old. 1971-1975.

We would turn some heads at the launch when a young girl would run for the truck , back up and I would drive on the trailer. Then everyone would have a few beers while the girls tied down the boat and made everything shipshape.
The n the guys would pile in the back of the truck with the beer chest and the girls would drive us home to wash the boat.

We trained them the correct way down the bayou.

My brother forgot to put the plug in. So as I was pulling the trailer out of the water he was doing circles and yelling at me to pull it back down. I did. Luckily boat didn’t sink. And we went fishing.

Being a white trash kid, nothing ever sucked worse than getting the boat in the water and the POS won’t start

Speaking of Fred's .... Years ago, we were sitting out on the deck. This guy and girl pull up to the landing on a jet ski. The guy gets off the jet ski runs out to the parking lot and the girl is there holding the rope. Next thing you know here comes this old beat-up full-size van. The dude backs down to the water and opens the back doors. They threw the jet ski in, closed the doors and were out of there.

Two guys with an old bass boat were launching from sweet water marine and the trailer had rollers. They unhooked the strap and it slid off the trailer into concrete. Literally 15 boats were waiting to launch so about 20 of us get out of our vehicles and pick up the bait and walk it to the water. Luckily the damn thing didn’t sink.

This is a great topic, I’m not too proud to admit that I too have learned some of these lessons the hard way, usually with my drunk grandad hollering at me the whole time but I learned nonetheless and wouldn’t trade those days with him for the world!

I like the dipshites that drive an SUV like a Land Rover or sequoia and attempt to get a pretty large boat out the water.

The back tires spin or don’t touch at all. They are clueless as to why suspension and towing capacity matter.

Pulling on a flat street is not what matters. Slopes, braking, rail road tracks, etc is where it really matters

My buddy and I would bring a couple of 6 packs, 2 lawn chairs and sunscreen to sit at the Bonnabel Blvd boat launch. Some people have the gene, no problem, some people don't. I was lucky, my first time, flawless, my wife is better than me, you better have that bow line, she's quick. I told her she should charge people $5 to launch them, she'd make a fortune.

Yeah, I got pretty proficient at this as my 14’ bateau had a slow leak and required to do this about every hour or so of fishing. Good times.

Saw a whole rig, Boat , trailer and truck go in the water at the Terrell Island ramp on Lake D'arbonne. I had just launched and toed up to the dock, was parking my truck and heard this dude yelling. Turned around to see the truck going in. He was trying to load it at the time. Was an old pick up with 3 on the column shift. Guess he knocked it out of gear . Anyway, truck totally submerged. Bed was full of trash, I spent the next hour with a dip net collecting miler lite cans and such with my dip net. Had to call a big wrecker and operator swam out and had to dive down and attach to bumper and yank it out.

You're describing a majority of boaters with this statement.

The boat launch is always a shite show, but great entertainment.
