He would have gained so much respect among Republican voters if he would have just said, "I'm a man of my word and will stick by what I said no matter who wants me to do what. I'm beholden to the one's who put me in this position and they are my constituents." And if Trump comes out and blasts him, then Trump loses the MAGA party and would have to explain why he lambasted a man for sticking to the word he gave to the American people. It would not be a good look for Trump and we know Trump's ego wouldn't have that.
