I actually can believe this. Cancer-linked flame retardants found in car interiors

Flame retardants in car seat foam may increase exposure to potentially cancer-causing chemicals—especially during the summer—according to a new study, and the researchers urge government officials to amend regulations to prohibit the use of flame retardants in cars to reduce health risks, as the safety and effectiveness of flame retardants faces growing scrutiny.

The researchers tested the cabin air of 101 electric, gas and hybrid cars across 30 states with a model year between 2015 and 2022 for potentially toxic flame retardants in both the winter and summer, according to the study published Tuesday in Environmental Science & Technology.

Flame retardants are used in many consumer products, like furniture, electronics and mattresses, and were added to car seat foam to meet requirements put in place by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 302, which was made to prevent or slow the spread of car-related fires.

This standard was set in the 1970s, and the study researchers are urging the NHTSA to update its standards to exclude the use of flame retardants due to their potentially harmful effects.

Add heated up styrofoam plates in the microwave to the list.

IIRC, some of this was brought up after Katrina because of formaldehyde and other chemicals coming off the RVs.

As people in the business put it, those normally stay on the lot for an extended period between manufacture and purchase, which lets a lot bleed off. Except the government was requisitioning them the second they crossed the state line and immediately putting people in them.

Cancer-linked?

Not sure that is enough to eliminate material that prevents fire.

Hey, how about letting the free market decide this one?

Linked? Fire is not linked, it will kill you faster than the quickest cancer.
Walk if you don't like the risk. Next will be your house, live in a car, lol, no cave then.

If foam gets heated up during a hot summer in a car that is sitting in a parking space, the chemicals within the foam will release a toxicant that you will breathe once you get in the car.

Out of anything, I do believe this.

I never liked that new car smell.

Now I know why.

So, when you get into a hot vehicle, roll the windows down and let all those chemicals dissipate. Seems common sense.

If we can’t say Master Bedroom we shouldn’t be able to say retardants.

That's not surprising. For the longest of time, firefighter jackets and pants have been linked to cancer as well. Apparently the chemicals used to manufacture fire retardant material is carcinogenic.
