Fox 8 Article

Oyster mafia, Nungesser, and Gordy Dove stacked; CPRA and the upper-mid Barataria basin fricked.

quote:

The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority told senators it has already spent $422 million on the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion through planning, engineer and early construction.

Senators also suggested contracts with the main construction firms, Archer Western and Alberici, and sub-contractors could leave the state liable for between $250 million and $500 million.

“That’s a billion dollars, or $700 million, or whatever, right there, without the economic benefit of the project happening,” said state Sen. Gary Carter Jr., D-Algiers.

quote:

Work on the $2.9 billion project came to a screeching halt weeks ago when Plaquemines Parish government issued a stop work order.

quote:

Funding for the diversion comes from fines and settlements stemming from the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dove conceded it is not clear at this point whether the state would have to pay back the $422 million to the boards that administer those funds.

Senator Pat Connick, R-Marrero, pleaded for urgency in solving the issue.

“We’re gonna lose this money,” Connick warned. “All this money’s gonna go to damages, breach of contract and the citizens of the state are going to get nothing.”

quote:

Dove, a former Terrebonne Parish President, said he is reluctant to force a project down the throat of a parish government that does not want it.

“Being a past parish president, I believe it’s up to the parish to be satisfied.”

So basically all the folks involved are going to get filthy rich for doing nothing. and the greased in companies are also going to get a ton of money for breach of contract penalties. on top of that! the state might have to pay back money that was "free" to the state in the first place. So its a double dip special.

We really do get the government we deserve. Lets keep arguing about abortion and Palestine though!!

Landry should be impeached over this. He is allowing this to happen.

Then, in 5-10 years, this project will be kicked off again and the price will be triple what it is right now, AT LEAST.

Government created the problem building levees shooting all of the sediment out into the Gulf. Now hurricanes and erosion are free to bring the coast closer to New Orleans and Houma every day.

Houma has the most to lose if Terrebonne Parish stops this! Hell, it would be cheaper to subsidize the oyster farmers if any damage does occur.

Remember how Landry and Nungesser had a sit down to discuss their differences and concerns prior to Nungesser saying he would not run for Governor, and instead would run for re-election for Lt. Gov?

Pepperidge Farms remembers.

You know, I dont even know what the issues are but what I do know is that a single parish holding up a 3 billion dollar coastal restoration project and the "leadership" allowing that to fly stinks like holy shite and is the reason why we are 50th in every fricking thing except high blood pressure and bare titties in public.

The Advocate went a little further on this. Some of the money that the contractor could be owed could be nullified by the fact that the contractor did not apply for the necessary parish permits. But a tit for tat like this only enriches the attorneys representing the state and companies.

The project just needs to be built it is probably one of only ways to naturally move water into the basin.

One idea that was floated in the 1990’s was a conveyance channel that started east of Donaldsonville and roughly paralleled Bayou Lafourche to Valentine where it would split in two where one channel would go to Barataria and the other would go into the Terrebonne basin. The big issue with that one is construction costs to dredge a channel.

One parallel idea I thought of recently would be to build a channel to Lake Des Allemands and add fresh water and sediment from there and create a flow into the basin. It shouldn’t impact oyster fishermen as much unless there are oyster leases that far up the basin. It would be a much larger scale Davis Pond, and levees would need to be constructed along the rim of the lake and Bayou and near places like Chackbay and Pleasure Bend.

On the other hand, anytime it rains a lot the Barataria Bay can get so fresh that the water is fresh enough to drink even as far south as Grand Isle.

Plaquemine parish should get no disaster relief for next hurricane season since they want to out a choke hold on the project at this point.

Well if that ain't in the ole Billy Nungesser playbook. He did the same thing to the Corps of Engineers when they were raising levees and building floodwalls after Katrina. Shutdown all the hurricane protection work until they promised to build a back levee around his and other big money donors houses. Crooked as it can get. They'll do this till they get their kickbacks, then remove the stop work order.
