It’s been frozen and disgusting for 56 years. The question is what’s different in recent years compared to the previous 54?

Takes more than a couple of years to tank a half century old restaurant chain. The actual answer to your question is “consumer tastes”, and over the last decade or so.

I'd like to blame Joe, but Red Lobster is closing because their food is frozen and disgusting.

It is closing because management decided to offer unlimited skrimps and crab legs in separate promotions and got destroyed.

Did the endless skrimps one time ... and soon divined the strategy. After your first 'helping,' they bring you more skrimps .... after a 10-15 min wait, and about 6 skrimps at a time.

Basically, its an endurance contest. They dole them out slowwwwwwwly hoping you will tire of the game and leave before you get 'too many.'

As long as Sam’s Club still sells Red Lobster biscuit mix I’m all gravy baby. Their biscuits are really the best thing they have to offer anyway.

Somebody miscalculated the volume versus price on that endless shrimp. There had to be tons of customers coming in and knocking the bottom out of it. The bell curve has shifted on the all-you-can-eat customer.

Don't get down on the Cheddar Bay Biscuits. A little known aphrodisiac.

Saw a family of 5 at Red Lobster in Katy about 6 years ago with snow crab legs. Looked over and the dad was biting the shell open with his teeth.

Server didn't give them a shell cracker. Didn't slow that dad down. I looked at my wife told her that's why I hadn't been to Red Lobster since I was a kid. Food and clientale.

RL isn't falling apart b/c of increased wages.

It's the exact same shite that's destroyed a number of once great American businesses. They were bought by a private equity company.

These fricking parasites never actually give a shite about the company they buy long term. Red Lobster owned all the property their restaurants were built on. First thing Golden Gate Capitol did was immediately sell said property to pay for their purchase of Red Lobster b/c of course these dick bags never actually have the money needed to buy the company they are planning on tearing apart. Then they started slashing costs as much as possible which tanked the quality of service and food. So now all the restaurants were suddenly on the hook for lease payments and they were unable to keep their quality level high enough to keep long term customers. That can work when sales are doing well but the moment you hit a slump you're in trouble and if the new property owners decide to raise the rents (which have all shot through the roof across the country the last few years) you're fricked b/c that's when the private equity pukes will decide it's time to pull up stakes, sell everything off, and move on to the next thing they are going to ruin.

The exact same thing is about to happen to Macy's if they can't fend off likely upcoming hostile takeover attempts. Two different equity companies have already tried to buy them out this year and its a 100% guarantee if do get bought said company will sell off all their property to get an immediate return.

I'm shocked they've remained open still.
I don't see how any those old 90's era chains remain open. Chili's/Applebee's/Ruby Tuesday/Red Lobster/TGIF/Olive Garden/O'Charley's.

Chilis survives by cutting costs on every menu item that isn’t covered by FTC regulations, from what I have seen.

A 8oz hamburger still has to have started out as 8oz hamburger pre-cooking.

OTOH, “chicken quesadillas” don’t necessarily say how much chicken has to be in it, to my wife’s annoyance.

thread summary: red lobster's food just sucks, this has nothing to do with the health of the economy.

can't argue with that i guess.

Red Lobster is one of those staple restaurants that I'm actually shocked still exists. I I think the last I went to one was in high school, and from the outside it has never looked like they reinvented themself in any way, shape or form.
