1948 - 38 of 140 and 84 of 416 --- 27.1 and 20.2
1952 - 40 of 149 and 76 of 459 --- 26.8 and 16.6
1956 - 37 of 153 and 98 of 469 --- 24.2 and 20.9
1960 - 34 of 152 and 71 of 461 --- 22.4 and 15.4
1964 - 36 of 163 and 90 of 504 --- 22.1 and 17.9
1968 - 45 of 174 and 107 of 527 --- 25.9 and 20.3
1972 - 33 of 195 and 94 of 600 --- 16.9 and 15.7
1976 - 34 of 198 and 94 of 613 --- 17.2 and 15.3
1980 - (USA boycott of Games)
1984 - 83 of 226 and 174 of 688 --- 36.7 and 25.3 (USSR did not compete)
1988 - 36 of 241 and 94 of 739 --- 14.9 and 12.7
1992 - 37 of 260 and 108 and 815 --- 14.2 and 13.3
1996 - 44 of 271 and 101 of 842 --- 16.2 and 12.0
2000 - 37 of 300 and 93 of 927 --- 12.3 and 10.0
2004 - 36 of 301 and 101 of 926 --- 12.0 and 10.9
2008 - 36 of 302 and 112 of 958 --- 11.9 and 11.7
2012 - 48 of 303 and 104 of 961 --- 15.8 and 10.8
2016 - 46 of 306 and 121 of 972 --- 15.0 and 12.4
2020 - 39 of 340 and 113 of 1080 --- 11.5 and 10.5
2024 - 5 of 74 and 30 of 232 --- 6.8 and 12.9 (in progress prior to start of T&F) (Russia is not competing)

Highest Gold percentage year = 36.7% in 1984
Lowest Gold percentage year = 11.5% in 2020

Highest Total percentage year = 25.3% in 1984
Lowest Total percentage year = 10.0% in 2000

Average Gold percentage (1988 - 2020) = 39.9 of 291.6 = 13.7%
Average Total percentage (1988 - 2020) = 105.2 of 913.3 = 11.5%

The gold medal % is down so far (but T&F will likely change that), but the total medal % could be the best since 1984.

Probably not possible to ever go back into the pre-70s dominance. The world is too small now - as in - not as isolated now. There are a large chunk of athletes who attend NCAA schools in track, swimming, etc. because we have the best coaches and facilities and then take that with them to beat us. It is a double-edged sword. That didn't used to exist. I was talking to Braden Holloway about this (BR native and current NC State coach) and he hates it, but it is what it is now. Swimming at the NCAA level was 95% American borm kids and now it's dropped to barely 50%. And the teams that didn't take in international talent fell behind.

Maybe the NCAA should have some type of American standard % of athletes like the CFL does. Make it 90 or 95%.

The world would then recede back very quickly without the US college system, especially the Caribbean and Europe. Either that or they would all then try to go the NAIA or something, but I don't think they would have near the success at LSU-Shreveport as they do at Arkansas and Florida and Oregon...

I would really like to see the percentage of medals won by American trained athletes.

We are slightly behind the pace from previous Olympics at Day 5 when you consider total events held:

Day 5 in 2008: 30 medals - 10 gold - 8 silver - 12 bronze
Day 5 in 2012: 29 medals - 12 gold - 8 silver - 9 bronze
Day 5 in 2016: 31 medals - 11 gold - 11 silver - 10 bronze
Day 5 in 2020: 38 medals - 14 gold - 14 silver - 10 bronze
Day 5 in 2024: 30 medals - 5 gold - 13 silver - 12 bronze

Schedules were slightly different but very similar.

Day 6 was big for us in the past but tomorrow doesn't look very promising so this gap might widen. Need T&F to show up huge and would be nice to see some other surprise stories.

2000 - 37 of 300 and 93 of 927 --- 12.3 and 10.0
2004 - 36 of 301 and 101 of 926 --- 12.0 and 10.9

The gold medal % and total medal % are close to recent averages after today's good day, but they need some more good days to keep pace until T&F kicks in.

340 sports. I wonder if anyone who isn't a wonk can name half of them. Not just two duded diving, but the different platform heights, the distances run or swum, etc.

This isn’t fun. Competition makes things better and more entertaining. The US doesn’t have to dominate.
