If you don't believe me, look at the 1955 and 1956 Oklahoma teams that set the record with 47 consecutive wins.
They played 1 top ten team during that stretch. And that was in a bowl game, which didn't actually count for the polls.

Their sos was #50 and #65 in both of those years.
