British soldiers didn't really want to be here in the first place. They lacked motivation to fight

We actually got our asses kicked the entire war so we just drained their resources and will to fight to keep the colonies and they just said frick it, y'all can have it. Sort of like the guerilla style war that has bit us in the arse from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan.

we didn't "win" it, we just made it more costly for them to keep fighting than to give us independence

This would be my theory as well but no idea if it's correct

Interesting, that would make sense

Maybe the British just had enough of us. Probably thought it wasn't worth the hassle to try and subdue a bunch of hillbillies living out in the sticks.

I thought it was because we hid in the woods and sniped them.

We fought dirty. It wasn't "gentleman like" to ambush the other sides' soldiers in the woods and have soldiers "sniping" commanders. The British didn't fight like that and we did. It is pretty much the most successful job of guerrilla warfare in history.

So it was like fighting ISIS?

It all started when a young man went against his father's wishes and joined the resistance. The father, a once famed military man now farmer, wanted peace and diplomacy, not war. But, war was inevitable. His son went off to join the Revolution.

One day, the father heard someone enter his home during dinner. He grabbed his pistol. It was his son! He was injured and tired from war. His son was a messenger whose charge was to deliver correspondence for the Colonies. More injured men came, British and Colonial alike. The farmer cared for all.

Soon, the British found his home. A ruthless commander, indifferent to the care the farmer provided for His Majesty's troops, killed the farmer's sons in an act of cruelty and cowardice.

The farmer, once compassionate and nonconfrontational, returned to a dark place he promised to never revisit. He swore to avenge the death of his sons, and much, much more.

And that, my friend, is how we won the Revolutionary War.

Battle of Kings Mountain is a good example. British were out of their element. Hillbillies were tougher and wanted it more

Britain was fighting a world war and North America was a minor theatre in the conflict.

Was it just a matter of the British not being able to devote their full resources to fight us?

More like they couldn't adapt their strategy to the situation. Britain had dramatically more resources. They had enough to win. But they consistently employed traditional battlefield tactics to fight the elusive, guerrilla-like Americans.
