An outstanding movie. Fantastic acting by Miles Teller and JK Simmons. I recommend it to just about everybody.

Overrated
Default answer for anyone on this board when a movie is mentioned in high regard for so long. Whiplash is sufficiently “rated”.
Its performances, its build up and pay off in the story, culminating in 15 heart pounding minutes with some of the best cinematography you’ll see, are just edge of your seat stuff, even on repeat viewings. It’s light years better than La La Land and it’s one of the best films of the last decade.

Movie is good build up was nice, but i think most people call it over rated because it is just hard to believe that this a-hole would purposely tank his performance and risk his reputation, just to embarrass this kid, just to make him break out of his cocoon and show his wings.

It was certainly better than Birdman. Oscar voters

Watched it after it made it to cable. I really enjoyed it. One of those that I couldn't turn away from til I knew how it ended. Haven't watched again, and doubt I will, for awhile.

As a drummer that started playing in the public school system through college I can tell you it can be (not always..) very much like that...
I have seen one band director throw his music stand across the room at the percussion section...

I didn’t see it as that being his intention. I just think he was trying to embarrass him

My understanding is the instructor (Fletcher) wanted a lasting legacy. And the beat way he knew how to do that was to mold and create a superstar that the world would remember. His methods required he push someone, in this case Andrew, entirely through his comfort zone and out the other side to greatness by all means necessary.
Hence the wry grin at the end.

That’s definitely possible. I took the grin as Fletcher thinking “damn, I didn’t think you had it in you”. But I could see either way being true
