This is not entirely true, it probably more accurate to say highly unlikely instead of impossible. Also, depends on how you define life or intellectual life. A technologically advanced society like ours is certainly possible given the size of space.

Ok, the odds of life not existing somewhere else are so low as to render it effectively impossible.

The odds of a society that is more advanced than ours however are much different, and it’s certainly possible all civilizations destroy themselves once becoming sufficiently advanced.
