A lot of good ones in this thread. Hard to beat most of those, so I'll put this up for a second tier sad song:

Goddam Lonely Love

quote:

I got green and I got blues
and everyday there's a little less difference between the two.
So I belly-up and disappear.
Well I ain't really drowning 'cause I see the beach from here.

I could take a Greyhound home but when I got there it'd be gone
along with everything a home is made up of.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Sister, listen to what your daddy says.
Don't be ashamed of things that hide behind your dress.
Belly-up and arch your back.
Well I ain't really falling asleep; I'm fading to black.

You could come to me by plane, but that wouldn't be the same
as that old motel room in Texarkana was.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Stop me if you've heard this one before:
A man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor.
Stop me if I ever get that far.
The sun's a desperate star that burns like every single one before.

And I could find another dream,
one that keeps me warm and clean
but I ain't dreamin' anymore, I'm waking up.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take everything you got
to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

that glenn Campbell song blows. the only emotion I feel from it is disappointment in how crappy it is.

this song is sad for the shameless cashing in on a national tragedy. Also, it sucks.

sufjan has a few very poignant songs. His entire album "carrie and Lowell" feels like this song.

Amazing Grace reminds me of funerals so that'd be my choice.

Also wanted to add:
My Father's House - Bruce Springsteen
Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
Long December - Counting Crows
The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young
Most of the Time - Bob Dylan

Edit: One More Light - Linkin Park (watch the video of them playing it on Jimmy Kimmel days after Chris Cornell committed suicide. Holy shite it's heavy)

shite. We are going to need to do a happy song thread after this.

I put up a DBT song, but I think Hank William's "So Lonesome I can cry" is the saddest. The Elvis Presley version of it is also very good.

Flirted With You All My Life
This song just crushes me. The "you" is suicide. Recorded a few months before he died of an overdose on muscle relaxants -- a brilliant, but tortured soul.

"Flirted With You All My Life"
by Vic Chesnutt

I am a man
I am self-aware
And everywhere I go
You're always right there with me
I've flirted with you all my life
Even kissed you once or twice
And to this day I swear it was nice
But clearly I was not ready
When you touched a friend of mine
I thought I would lose my mind
But I found out with time
That really I was was not ready, no no
Oh, death
Oh, death
Oh, death
Clearly
I'm not ready
Oh, death you hector me
Decimate those dear to me
Tease me with your sweet relief
You are cruel and you are constant
When my mom was cancer sick
She fought but then succumb to it
But you made her beg for it
Lord Jesus, please I'm ready
Oh, death
Oh, death
Oh, death
Clearly
I'm not ready
No, no
Oh, death
Oh, death
Oh, death
Clearly
I'm not ready
No, no

Nutshell - Alice in Chains
Means a lot of different things to people.

Sludge Factory - Alice in Chains

This is Staley talking about his impending death. Friends trying to save him but getting high off his stash instead. The Record company trying to get what they can out of him before its too late.

Can you imagine the guys playing this live knowing what it's about?

the entire Nebraska album by Springsteen is haunting. Its really the only album by him that I listen to. It is incredible.
