Are Butterball turkeys worth paying more for or are all turkeys they sell at grocery stores pretty much the same? My wife insists on buying Butterball but I believe a turkey is a turkey and all the major brands they sell are good and not much difference between them.

What extra cost? You talking fresh or frozen?

I just picked up a frozen butterball for 99 cents a pound

Same here. Winn-Dixie has them for $.99 a lb. until at least tomorrow's closing time and perhaps longer.

They also have a different brand for $.49 a lb. in the 10 lb. and up range.

Hell, you can't find chickens for $.99 a lb. most days now.

You want extra cost, go price "Organic" turkeys at $4+ a lb. Now that's ridiculous.

I think a turkey is a turkey.

If you are cooking it in the oven, the ball of butter up inside a Butterball may help keep it moist and not dry out the inside as much.

If you are smoking it, it won't do you any good. It doesn't really get hot enough to melt it. I had a cousin find that out the hard way.

I'm sure he is referring to the store brand vs Butterball.

As in Winn Dixie has the store brand for.49 a pound and Butterballs for .99 a pound

We have Bowman and Landes free range turkey up here in Ohio (albeit $4.59 a pound), but you absolutely can taste a difference. It is exponentially better than any other turkey I've ever had.

Almost all turkeys are pumped up with a brine nowadays so there's not much difference. Kosher turkeys are noticeably better if you don't mind spending the extra $$

That is correct. Butterball's are always more expensive than the other brands.

No, but fresh turkey's with none of the pre-injection stuff and brine water are.

Update: I just went to Winn Dixie and purchased a 9.27 lb. Jennie-O turkey for $4.54. I'm putting it on the smoker and I'm sure it will be just fine.

I’ve used BB and a variety of cheaper brands on the smoker and I can’t tell the difference after brining them.

This is what I like to use. This year I'm going to toss it in my dry age fridge for a few days to dry the skin up...see if it makes a difference when I fry it.

There's an actual ball of butter in those things?

Good lord that's awesome. If I still had a young family, I'd buy 5 and prepare their tails for some smoked turkey sandwiches for the next 12 months

Whole Foods is selling turkeys for $65. I wonder how much better they are.

Plus he said smoking wouldn't get it hot enough to melt the butter, butter melts at under 100 degrees. That was one raw bird coming out of his friend's smoker.

In an interview with the AP, Butterball CEO Rod Brenneman clears up an apparently widely held misconception about the butter content of his company’s birds:

"Many people think Butterball turkeys have butter in them, but they don’t. Basically the name came about because of their plump size and golden color. We’re proud of the Butterball name. There is no talk or joke about being a butterball at this company. Only about our turkeys. They’re plump."

Consumerist

I never even imagined that people were out there thinking the turkey had a damned ball of butter in it.

Me either...then I remembered this girl I "dated" in college who thought that if you tapped a bottle of Heinz ketchup directly on the raised 57 that is on the bottle, the ketchup would come out faster. Yeah, she wasn't that bright (but she was fun!)
