Bao Asian Market & Deli Prairieville ·
45 tickets handed out before 11 am, and at least 10 people turned away already, and they won’t be here until at least 1…the hype is real
Today, people in Prairieville were waiting an hour in line to get a ticket, then going back when the king cakes arrived at the Bao Asian restaurant.

NEW ORLEANS (NOLA WEEKEND) - The lightly-sweet, super-flaky king cake from Dong Phuong Bakery, based in New Orleans East, has surged in popularity throughout the area — especially since winning a James Beard award in 2018.
Fans of the wildly-popular king cake can once again get their hands on the in-demand staple without traveling to New Orleans East. The bakery announced a list of businesses it will partner with as vendors to distribute king cakes around town this season.
Dong Phuong’s vendor list for 2022 includes nearly 20 locations in New Orleans, on the West Bank, North Shore, Metairie, Harahan, Chalmette, Baton Rouge and even stretches to Mississippi.

One helpful tip for customers is to find out king cake delivery days and times from your nearest vendors in advance. A good rule is to call the retailer to find out availability in advance to avoid a blank trip.
Dong Phuong started creating its iconic king cakes in 2008, known for its brioche dough with scalloped edges and cream cheese-based icing.

ETA: It's $28.99 for plain and $32.99 for flavors.

They are the best in my opinion.
But I wouldn't wait more than a couple of minutes for any king cake

They're the best king cake I've ever tasted, but I still wouldn't wait in a line for one.

Nah. There are many others that are better.

They are the best. They are unique.
I still believe that Manny's is the best traditional king cake.

I don't mind the little bit of a hunt to find them and going out of my way, but not waiting in line for more than 5 minutes or so for them, and for sure ain't driving out to the East to get them.
They are legit the best king cakes in the city.

Guess that’s my question. Is it so good it transcends just king cake? Or is it just a really good king cake. I like king but I’ve never had one I’d wait in line for.

My opinion is they are on another level.
But again, I don't care enough to wait for one.
I have heard the Bywater Bakery ones they have at King Cake Hub are legit.

A blogger from NOLA has a detailed recipe for making this version. She says, "Hands down, my favorite king cake is from Dong Phuong (DP) in New Orleans East, a Vietnamese-French bakery that I grew up across the street from for most of my childhood."
I had a piece of one that was made with her recipe, and it was really good.

Hell no. Outrageously overrated by everyone.
I find them gross.

Crazy talk.
Gross is a McKenzie king cake.
And if everyone else thinks they are good(Outrageously overrated by everyone.) then it's probably you with odd taste.
Ha, how are they gross?

I finally gave in and bought one last year and thought it was definitely overrated. It was “good” but wasn’t some culinary masterpiece

They are good. They are lighter weight/volume and "fluffier" than most other king cakes.
They are not worth an hour wait.
The demand is not all that high, the Dong has limited supply to artificially create demand.
In words... the fact that they don't produce that many of them, feeds the demand for them.
They sell them at Jeanfreau's in Chalmette and if I'm there and they have some available, I'll grab one.
But then again... I laugh at all the fools who stand in line at Manny Randazzo's. Especially when the same thing can be found at any of the Nonna's locations.

And I agree. Stay away. Go buy any other kind. Please. Everybody. TIA.

King cakes are by far the most overrated of all things LA culinary.
If you've got a sweets' craving, then they can help. But to wait in line? No thanks.
Have had theirs. IMO, Meche's (Lafayette) are better. But again, who cares.

I grew up on Manny Randazzo and it will always be my all-time favorite. Manny and Camellia City I find to be top notch. Not the Randazzo sold in a box in BR, but the fresh made ones from the bakery.
Nothing has ever come close for me…until I had Dong Phuong.
Dong Phuong is very good. But I don’t see any reason to freak out over them and go crazy. I’d wait maybe a half hour for a Randazzo and I would a Dong Phuong as well I guess.
Is it the best thing ever? No, but it is one of the best king cakes.

To me they are. I have had probably 5 different ones so far this year and they are the clear #1. I am 2 mins from one of the stores that carry them so going out of my way to track one down isn’t something I have to deal with.

They make a pretty substantial amount.
I’m not trying to wait for hours but I’ll drive out there 2-3 times in a season and grab a few for friends and family. I think the worst I’ve waited in like is 5 to 10 minutes (like 10-20 people ordering and paying… not waiting for a fresh batch or anything)
