Who's got them big and fresh right now?
Anywhere?
Anywhere?

Friend,
Mother and I always found that Dennis Seafood near W Esplanade and Clearview had the most consistently full and well seasoned boiled crab in the Metro. Unfortunately, Dennis’ has been out of crabs the last two days and will not have any this weekend because their supplier did not catch any today. Hard times for crabs right now. This should be approaching peak season for Pontchartrain, but something is amiss.
Harbor Seafood and Kenner Seafood are good options. Captain Sid’s, Schaefer’s, and Deanie’s are good options in Bucktown. In New Orleans East, Castnet Seafood is decent on crab. The Westwego seafood market probably has some good ones, but I’ve never been. Big Fisherman closed Uptown. I am uncertain if Zimmer’s sells boiled crabs anymore.
Don’t tell anyone I said this but I think steamed crab with Old Bay is better than boiled with Zatarain’s. And if the crab is not fresh, you will probably get sick eating it if you can tolerate more than a couple of bites.

I disagree, but thank you for your recommendations, friend.

You should check out the Westwego lot some time if you haven't been, though. They don't do boiled (at least not that I'm aware). But they have plenty varied fresh seafood options.

I miss Sid Mar's, by the way. I was wanting to go eat somewhere as close to that as possible. I realize such a thing probably doesn't exist anymore.

Friend,
I am sad to report Dennis’ is out of crabs. I just spoke to Uncle who swung by there earlier today and their supplier who crabs Pontchartrain has struck out the last three days. Perhaps calling these other markets is a good idea before making the trip.
Sidmar’s reopened as a chain themed restaurant on Vets behind the old dome roofed Kinko’s a decade ago, but it wasn’t the same as the on the 17th St Canal, and closed within a year or two. Sadly, there are no places like it anymore.
One of the area’s best crabbers and boilers, Louie Lipps, ran a great spot out in Frenier near LaPlace. But I am pretty sure he did not reopen after Ida. Fat, clean, perfect and close to the water. Call him and tell him to reopen.

That's the closest thing I've found to SidMars since IT closed. Sadly, Louie Lipps gave up the ghost as well.

Friend,
Kenner Seafood has them. Harbor has large for $6 each. The Blue Crab in East End near the old Bart’s has them for $7 each. I have not been to The Blue Crab, but it might give you a taste of Sid Mar’s. Hard to believe boiled crabs cost $6 from a seafood market in the middle of summer. I can only imagine what the people on the Chesapeake, who depend on our crabs, are paying for them now.
$80 a dozen for med-large at seafood markets there, is what my source is telling me. So I guess Louisiana crab prices have finally leveled off with Maryland prices. Maryland used to charge 3x as much. Ida wiped out so many crabbers in S Louisiana, the remaining ones can charge Maryland prices now.

It’s worth the time, money and effort to learn when the crabs run in Grand Isle. Pick your spot and catch your own. We do that now and it’s well worth it. Doesn’t quite help when you have the envie on a random week day or weekend, but that is where we are right now. We usually do this twice a year and catch all we want. Eat some and freeze bodies /meat for future dishes.

Fried, you and mother should go by Dennis' and tell him his crabber sucks and needs to move his cages. One crabber buddy of mine had 56 pans today and another had 40 something.

Last time I called around for crabs from Dennis and the 2 places in Bucktown I asked what the deal was with crabs being scarce. I was told lots of crabs were being shipped up to Maryland because they pay well for them. They have the same blue crabs Pontchartrain has in their waters and pay top dollar.

I was told pretty much the same.
