I absolutely love this thing

the chemex got broken in the move so this has had to fill in for now until we buy a new one but holy crap this can squirt out some good brown water.

the customization options are endless and because it has 'netflix profiles' i can set mine up including strength and water temp until its exactly the way i like it but keeps the default values for everyone else. you can set this on the app as well but there's really no need to use the app; you can do it right from the touchscreen.

the 'crema' or whatever you call it is perfect. i never realized how shitty most coffee was and my need to 'fix' it by adding creamer to it. i haven't once added cream to anything i've made; literally the flavor is so balanced there's no need. just a damn good drink.

it does the 'frothy' thing but aside from testing out the various lattes, cappucinos, etc. i haven't really had much desire to do those. i was never a big latte or cappucino fan so the milk-based coffee drinks don't hold much appeal to me. i love how you can do a 'LONG' which compresses 2 pucks into your cup, the doppio, the espresso which is absolutely perfect and in general, i haven't found anything that comes out of this to be lacking..and it can make a shite TON of different drinks.

Clean up and refilling beans are insanely stupidly easy. just lift the top off to dump more beans in and the water holder slides off and you can see its about a 10 second process to refill it. the front slides out and the tray holding the used pucks and water spills can be dumped in the sink and re-attached in maybe 30 seconds. very VERY well designed machine.

can't imagine buying an $800 machine and using tap water to fill it

Most machines have a built in filter, I know mine does. You want him to use bottled water?

and it was way more than $800

but yes, it has a little litmus test strip so you can dial in the water hardness which i think just increases/decreases the descaling interval and it does have a filter system which i'm not using; the RO system we have leaves our water clear and zero weird smells or tastes so it makes a great brew without it. i may try the filter after i've used this a couple months just to see if i can tell any difference.

i'm not sure why someone would think these expensive machines wouldn't have features in place to improve the water taste if needed and to keep the equipment in good shape. even most $50 coffeemakers come with a little charcoal filter pouch at least.

I use the filtered water out of my fridge. What's wrong with tap water, assuming you live somewhere with good water?

Coffee is like 90% water and a lot of tap water tastes weird.

This looks like an espresso machine though, which uses less water.
