BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The Calandro’s Supermarket location on the corner of Perkins Road and Siegen Lane in Baton Rouge is being sold.
The second Calandro’s location, on Government Street, is not being sold and will remain open.
The Perkins location will become an Oak Point Fresh Market.
Oak Point is part of a larger group of stores owned by the Sumich family. Together, they currently operate four other groceries including Oak Point Fresh Market locations in Watson and Central, Louisiana.
Calandro’s issued the following statement:
For 84 years, the Calandro family has proudly served the Greater Baton Rouge community, with 24 of those years dedicated to their Perkins Road location. Today, the Calandro and Sumich families are excited to share that effective January 7, 2025, the community favorite supermarket on the corner of Perkins Road and Siegen Lane, will transition ownership from one family-owned local grocery family to another: Oak Point Fresh Markets.
The Calandro family made this decision thoughtfully, choosing to partner with the Sumich family of Oak Point Fresh Markets, a company founded in the early 1950s by Matthew and Willie Sumich in Buras, Louisiana. Both families share a deep commitment to quality, community, and treating employees like family—values that have made them trusted names in local grocery retail. The Calandro family will continue to service the Baton Rouge community at their original location in Mid-City at 4142 Government Street.
The Sumich family and Oak Point Fresh Markets are honored to continue the Calandro family’s legacy of excellence at the Perkins location. Oak Point plans to maintain many of the wonderful product selections customers have come to know and love while introducing unique items and services that are signature to their stores.
Oak Point Fresh Markets proudly operates with the motto, “Love Where You Shop”, and the Sumich family extends this philosophy to their employees: “Love Where You Work" because we love where we live.” This dedication reflects their mission to serve the St. George area and South Baton Rouge with the same passion and excellence they bring to their Watson and Central locations.
Both families are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for customers and employees alike. The teams at Calandro’s and Oak Point are working together to provide job opportunities for the valued Calandro’s Perkins staff as part of this transition.
The Sumich family and Oak Point Fresh Markets express deep gratitude to the Calandro family for their decades of service and dedication to Baton Rouge and look forward to serving the community with the same high standards of quality, care, and community connection.

I've been knowing this for about 2 to 3 weeks. When I heard about it, the first thing that came to mind was, thank goodness I'm no longer on the King Cake Krewe at Oak Point.

Worked there in high school as a stock boy, circa 2004. Mark and his sons are good people and ran a great store. Glad it’s Oak Point though, and not something else.

I love Calandro's...sounds like it will still have that good Ole family run business feel and attention.
Look forward to visiting.

At least it’s an Oak Point. Not a bad consolation for losing the Calandros

Will our favorite beer expert still be around? What about the raffle?

Cdro should be here soon to give us the details. Good thing about Oak Point is that it shouldn’t be a step down from Calandros as far as the booze goes. If you’ve never been to one of their locations, they do a great job with their allocations and store picks.

Oak Point is probably about best case scenario if Calandros is ready to get out of that location. I think it's a bit of a step down, but it's a good store.

It will be a welcome change/addition to St. George.

Family owned? Got some of my business, I'll always pay a little more for the privilege.

Well that's the problem these days...you and your privilege.

If Cdro shows up…Can we please get some help with the meat department at Government street? Beef selection is stale. Never any prime NY strip. No ability to get a tomahawk.

Idk maybe it’s good. Maybe it’s bad. The older I get, the less I like change and I liked that Calandros. But I’ll check it out
