I went to Casamento's on Saturday after Jazz Fest and had probably the worst oysters I've ever had. They were filled w/ grit and dirt and the pan had a nice layer of muddy water on the bottom of it. Someone needs to teach these people how to clean oysters!

Also had oysters at Superior Seafood and Blind Pelican this weekend. Blind Pelican obviously had the best price (happy hour 4-8 $0.25 oysters) but also the best size and tasting. Superior Seafood had good ones too but not as good. But at least both of them didn't come w/ a nice helping of grit and dirt.

I love me some Blind Pelican happy hour.

I've had bad oysters at Casamento's only once. I know they claim P&J oysters but I always see Louisiana Seafood Exchange delivering sacks to them. Does LSE distribute for P&J ?

Oysters in the ACME tent at TPC yesterday were gorgeous. Prettiest I've seen all year, and best tasting I've had too.

Those poor MF'ers shucked oysters for a good 10 hours. My wrists would break after a day like that.

Have you ever gone fishing for oysters before? Oysters are going to be dirty as a rule, so don't call out one restaurant for one delivery, it shows you don't know jack. Yes, taking the time to rinse them may be worth it in cases but in most it doesn't.

I had some chargrilled at Don's on Airline yesterday and they were pretty bad. Worst I've ever had were at Beausoleil, which disappointed me, because I liked everything else I've had there.

As for Casamento's, I've never had a problem with their oysters, although I gotta admit, on my most recent visits I've opted for the softshell crabs instead of oysters.

I give them a quick rinse right before shucking. Rinsing after they're shucked is sin b4 Gawd.

You have to just be good with the knife, and not let the shmutz get into the liquor.

Maybe the Casamento's dude knows vacation is near, and said F it.

Are you just looking for a fight. Obviously oysters are dirty. When you buy a sack of of them the dirty water is typically dripping off them. But you don't dump the into an ice chest and start shucking when you get home, you hose them down pretty good to clean them off at the very least. Putting a clean knife through the dirty outer shell to get to the oyster inside will result in the dirt getting onto the oyster.

If a restaurant can't spend a little bit of time cleaning their oysters, they have problems. 10/12 oysters being gritty is unacceptable.

ETA: having a puddle of muddy water on your tray is unacceptable.

Your first problem........

To the OP, I've been to Cassamentos a bunch and have never had a bad experience with their raw oysters. I would chalk it up to fluke and hope it never happens again, but this is the first I've heard of this complaint from there.

maybe it's just a one time thing, especially if you have been there a couple times. no need for the bad publicity, unless it has happened time after time.

I noticed it last time I was there (it was within the past two weeks). I noticed it particularly at the shucking station waiting for a table. Oysters were just covered in mud on the outside.

I actually got a dozen, though, and they were perfectly fine when served. This guy's experience wasn't an isolated incident. They need to rinse them off before sending them to be shucked.

So I have to go back and confirm that my bad experience was common occurrence by having another bad experience before I can comment on my first bad experience, that's ridiculous. Bad publicity might make them change their ways...but I doubt it since I they've been around for 90 years.

When you are serving fresh oysters you should spend the time to hose them down to remove as much excess dirt and debris as possible before shucking. As many oysters a Casamento's goes through, they should have a regular station for hosing down the oysters. I'm kind of surprised nobody has developed a commercial oyster washing machine that runs oysters along a conveyor belt through a pressure washer to scour away all excess dirt and debris.

Exactly. It's in the handbook.

well you could have told them and given them a chance to correct it in the first place, instead of coming on here to bitch about it. but hey freedom of speech.

That's pretty dumb. Dude went to get some good oysters and ended up with some dirty ones. Grounds for bitching if there ever was any..
