Homemade hot cocoa vs. store bought

Thinking about the eventual cold weather we'll be receiving and was wondering if anyone on the F&D Board has attempted making hot cocoa from scratch and how it compares to store bought. We usually buy Abuelita hot chocolate pucks so if I were to make one from scratch I'd go with a flavor similar to that.

My wife has made it and bought every brand that ever made it.
Land O Lakes Chocolate Supreme is the best brand. I don’t think it’s a secret because it sells out at the grocery stores. You can find it on Amazon.

Sillycow is good, I don't think I ever made anything else. If you mean "from scratch" to mean shaving chocolate and whatnot, F to the No. The kids wants marshmallows and a warm mug. You can also solve that problem with homemade chicken stock, etc.

From scratch I mean unsweetened cocoa powder and sugar and whatever else goes in. The Abuelita recipe uses cinnamon and chili peppers. Not sure if I would risk making that from scratch but I think I can dabble with a traditional hot cocoa.

Make it from milk, cream, and shavings from a quality chocolate bar... Maybe throw in a cinnamon stick and a pinch of salt if you'd like.

I think that's overthinking it. Dutched vs. non Dutched cocoa, 40 types of sugars, etc. All of that may be F&D fodder, but you usually get the warning order about nine minutes before the kids want it. If you're planning on a big event (re-engagement or whatevs,) maybe. But don't make it hard. Make it right. That time of night (kids or adults) is not the time for experimentation.
Maybe dip your toe in by shaving a chocolate on top that has chilis in it on top of the mug? I'm sure this recipe for Mexican hot chocolate is delicious, but that's not happening 20 minutes into a movie night.

This wouldn't be a quick pinch thing. Thinking about doing it later this year when family comes to down and making a big batch of the stuff.

I make mine with Pet milk, unsweetened cocoa, and maybe a quarter to half can of condensed milk. Heat for about 10 minutes, stir occasionally. Pour into mug and add mini marshmallows.

Very easy tip that I use...add about a tablespoon of powdered coffee creamer mix to the packet of Swiss Miss and use milk instead of water.
