I'm going to do Drunken Chicken this weekend for a gathering and have a couple of questions.
First, for an expected gathering of 20 adults, how many whole chickens should if cook?
Second, to stand the chickens up on the grill, should I go purchase the wire stands at Academy or use empty or half full aluminum cans of beer or water?
Thanks,

A couple of briskets? Damn son, that's going to feed all 20 people right there.
I would just do 3-4 chickens if youre going for variety.

Fryer chicken average size is 3-4 pounds raw.
Roaster chicken average size is 4.5-5.5 punds precooked weight.
Edible portion yield for cooked chicken is 70-75%.
Fryers will yield approximately 2-3 pounds of meat and roaster will yield approximately 3.5-4 pounds of edible meat.
If chicken is your only protien, you want to allow 6-8 ounces of meat per person @20 people equates to 120-160 total ounces. That's 3-4 fryers and 2-3 roasters.
If it were me, I'd err on the side of having too much rather than not enough and do 5 fryers or 4 roasters.

Any advice on using the wire stands to hold them up?

I have a couple of grills/smokers that can hold 10 chickens. Especially placed vertically...

Assuming you have dark meat eaters, each chicken easily serves 4 people. Two breasts with wing and two leg quarters. You can chop the breast in half and separate the leg quarter and probably get 8 servings per bird especially with other proteins being served.
Vertical cooking is nice, but for a crowd, I like doing chicken halves. Much easier to portion and serve when ready. One chop per half and you have 1/4s. Two more chops per half and you have 1/8s. Convenience is nice when you are serving a crowd imo.

These types of threads have now become funny to me.
I wish I was present when poster cooks food for 200 people without knowing how to plug in a microwave to start op

Beer cans work just fine.

Chicken is the easiest food ever to figure on amount of people because it's based on number of pieces, not pounds.
They will either eat 1/4 chicken or 1/2 chicken. If you are serving a full meal with chicken as the only entree, then 1/2 chicken per person it is. If you are serving other items, then 1/4 chicken per person it is.
For 20 adults with other items, you need 5 chickens.
One "medium" brisket can be estimated at around 10 pounds of cooked meat. 1 pound per person if brisket is your main entree. 1/2 pound per person with other items is a good standard. So one "medium" brisket will give you 20 servings with other food.

My backyard smoker will cook 12.
I do have a friend with one that can cook 90 chickens, which we use for fundraisers and whatnot.

I have a family of 4, we eat off a rotisserie chicken for supper and have leftovers. If you have 20 people with other stuff I wouldn't do more than 3 chickens.
