I've never had Kimchi, but I think i'd probably like it. Before I venture into making my own, what is a good brand so I can taste to see if I like it?

Whole foods and trader Joe's carry good ones.
I'd go whole foods first

I don't know the brand name. It looks like this. It's found at most asian groceries.

Trader Joe's has pretty good kimchi. If you're in Baton Rouge, they sell some kimchi at Red Stick Spice that's good, but it costs slightly less than cocaine. Name of the brand is Cultured Guru.
There's also this variety at Asian markets in a big glass bottle with a white label and red/blue writing on it. That's pretty decent. It's super fermented - open the jar over the sink because stuff will pour out.

I don't know the brand, but the one at Vinh Phat is my favorite. The store itself is deteriorating. Anyway, go in back right corner in cooler by Ramen selection.
My personal preference is to open and let it reach it's peak in about 2 days with fermentation. This has more to due more than likely of we almost always had about to go completely bad Kim Chi vs. fresh when I grew up.

It's interesting. I had it a couple times at Korean restaurants while I was in China a few months ago. Definitely an acquired taste or for adventurous palates. I'd try an asian market and ask what they think is best.

Here's a good soup for cold days, or days you have a cold. Kimchi jjigae . I'm sure there are much better recipes out there than the one I used, but it's a starting point.

I make a kimchi fried rice....This serves 6
Pre-cook 2 cups rice
saute onion & garlic
Drain 2 16 oz jars of kimchi liquid and save (I usually get about 1 1 /2 cups of liquid)
add kimchi to onions and saute for 2-3 minutes
add pre cooked rice and sautee 5 minutes
add kimchi liquid and cook 5 minutes
I usually roast some Brussels sprouts with a thia chili sauce and put this on top of the rice with some cooked shrimp.
I also sometimes chop a little kimchi and put on my tuna burger

Got to Southside Produce and get some from Cultured Guru in the refrigerated section. It's not cheap but it's the best I've had.
Open the jar and eat it like pickles baw then use the leftover juice in Bloody's.

I eat kimchi straight out the jar or bowl. I also use it in bacon kimchi fried rice and to kick up supermarket ramen. I really want to try it on a fried chicken sandwich.

Another vote for Cultured Guru.
I like kimchi on sandwiches, rice dishes, chips, and various other applications.

TJ used to have really good Kimchi in these foil packs. They haven't carried it at the BR location in quite a few years, unless I'm am missing something.

I've made my own several times, but my wife said I can only eat it when she's out of town.

Target has a decent one... I think the brand is 'Seoul'.
