Oven broiler question: coil red on bottom?

I broiled something for the first time in my new apartment's oven.
I noticed when I checked on the food stuffs that the bottom coil was red hot, but not the top one. So the food was being broiled from underneath.
This is the first time I've ever seen this. Is my oven OK? Is my top coil burned out?
TIA.

Does not compute. If electric, hence a coil, it comes from the top. Gas broil from the bottom. Btw, you should leave the door open when you broil so it doesn't shut the broiler off. And make sure you know what you're doing with the broil. Don't try to cook something large far away from the broiler. It's only meant for high heat placed no more than 4-6 inches from broiler.

When an electric oven is operating properly and "broil" is selected, only the top coil should heat up. The bottom coil should only heat up when "bake" is selected.

I was broiling bread to make toast and was perplexed why it was taking so long, and realized the bottoms were browning but not the tops. And that was because the bottom coil was on. I had the dial on broil, but it has the tendency to slip off, so I might've positioned it a little off.
I'll take a closer look at it.

is there a drawer or something under the main door of the oven?

When preheating on many newer models, both elements will come on.
On Bake after it reaches temp you will only have the bottom element on.
On broil only the top element should come on.
If both of them do turn red under certain settings than you know the elements are good.
If one element is staying on too long or both are staying on, then your temperature probe is bad.
If you are putting it on broil and the bottom element comes on, but not the top then it could be a control board issue.

If it's an electric over, the broiler coil is on the top.
You may have an old oven knob that has all the numbers worn off of it.
Mine has that. I thought the broiler was on but turns out I just had the oven on high heat.
The coil on the top should be on and not the bottom if the broiler is on.
