Pit Barrel Cooker or Weber Smoky Mountain

I have a MES and I love it but a part of me wants to mess around with a traditional type smoker where you have to regulate temps and such. I also need something that would double as a grill for direct cooking as well since my gas grill is on its last leg.

I have a pit barrel cooker and as a smoker it's terrible and don't let anyone tell you different.
As a high heat cooker for mass quantities of chicken and wings, it's the best and I get a lot of use out of it for that.
Get the weber.

If you need a smoker and a grill, then get a Weber Kettle.
If you just want a smoker, then get a WSM. A WSM is a lot more versatile and can easily replicate a PBC by just adding a hanging rack.

I have WSM. Love it, but as a smoker. Can't really grill on it.
Only time I grill something on it is if I have skirt steak or something similar and I put my grate on top of the coals for fast high heat.
It's not designed to be a grill.
ETA: Agree with RedHawk, get the kettle.

You know for about the same price as a pit barrel, you can get a 26 inch weber kettle and some accessories and probably have the best of all worlds.

If you like smoked meat on the pit barrel, then you have shitty taste in bbq.
The grease fog from that thing is disgusting.

If you say so. If you're getting disgusting BBQ off a PBC, it's a you problem

I got a pbc as a gift. The thing (in theory) is designed for novices, who for the most part don't want to learn some finer points about bbq and low and slow.
If you like that disgusting, creosote grease dripping fog, then enjoy.
It would actually be a better product if they produced a heat diffuser for it. Or something to keep the fat from excessively dripping into the coals.
That smoke people get from a pbc comes from excessive burning fat, not coals or wood. It tastes terrible.
Bon appetit.

I guess all the great reviews from people that do BBQ for a living are just full of shite.

Well if they're endorsing a product because they're receiving compensation or press or free merchandise, then yeah they're full of shite.

Look, I told the guy exactly why he shouldn't get a pbc.
Now how about you tell him why he should.

Because everything you've said is bullshite. You're probably one of these douchebags that thinks of you aren't hovering over your smoker there's no way anything's my good is coming off it.
No idea who's upvoting you, but your opinion is garbage

Have you ever seen a BBQ restaurant that uses Pit Barrel Cookers before?

WSM vote here. Very versatile and easy to dial in the temps for extended periods of time, for long 12 to 16 hour cooks. Also, the Virtual Weber Bullet page is an awesome resource with tips, tricks and recipes as well as helpful links.
