I've seen many private parties in restaurants around BR where the host has chafing dishes set out that are paid for, and then patrons pay for their own sit down food.

Ah so you want to throw a big party but not have to pay for it ?

yeah and they're usually easy to get, they've seated us in there before without even requesting it

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will look into a few. Its so hard because I plan to invite close to 60 people but its a crapshoot to see who will show up. I think I'm confused over what kind of birthday party you're throwing. Is it just going to be a cocktail hour with apps or is it just apps with a cash bar? Then, if people want to stay, they order and pay for their own food and drink thereafter? Will they stay in the same room as the party to do that? That may also create a separate checks issue.

I know LL said she's seen this before. I have not, so I'm interested in how the logistics work.
