Spaghetti worms in drum fish

I purchased some black drum yesterday from Whole Foods and blackened it in a skillet. The fish was not cheap since it was from WF. After cooking, I noticed 2-3 spaghetti worms in each fillet -- a pretty gross find. I removed the worms and served the fish, since Google said they weren't harmful. In the future, I'm going to ask WF to make sure they aren't selling wormy fish.

It happens. I hate the worms, so the filets with it go to the dogs.
I jnow they aren't harmful but they are gros.

I don't care for them. I remove them if there aren't many, chunk the fillet if there are.
They are very common in drum, especially big ones. All you can do is check it out beforehand. If it's a big enough concern, buy something without worms...my favorite is the seabass.

Different fish can have them, sure. But by eating drum, you're really increasing your odds. Pick something like tuna and you're pretty much guaranteed not to have a problem.

They are disgusting and I would not have eaten it, no matter the price.

We get a worm in red grouper here. They aren't as long as the spaghetti worms and are black so picking them out or cutting around them is pretty easy. Even if I miss one they aren't off tasting or even noticable after cooking for that matter. The only thing I think I would have had a problem with is that the fish guy at a place like WF didn't prep the fillets better before putting them out for you.

I purchased a wild caught black drum filet from WF years ago that wound up with the bigger white worms. I don't think those worms are pathogenic to humans, but the smaller coiled Anasakis worms are more dangerous (even if spotted and removed).

Hm, people always told me they were fine so I always just pick them out and toss them. Very common in bigger drum and even bull reds. Do you have any evidence that they could be harmful?

I have a friend that hates drum or grouper, and calls the fish worm food.

Honestly, just taking the Wikipedia article at face value. I can't remember what sites I visited for information when I came across all those worms in that piece of fish, but the Wikipedia article is along similar lines. Probably worth mentioning that I was intending to make ceviche so that greatly increased the risk.

I fried some specks last night that had worms in them. My wife wanted me to pull them out. I told her hell no and that frying them will take care of the worms.
