Looking at getting a turkey fryer without the safety BS that always goes out and prevents the gas from flowing. Specifically the HP cookers 30qt or 40qt setups.

The 30qt (12"x17.5") stands the bird up like the others setups. The 40qt (14.5x17) lays the bird flat. Laying flat is supposed to use less oil and the oil level is not as high in the pot. The turkeys I usually fry are usually in the 18-20lb range. Anyone see any reason not to go with the 40qt. Frying a turkey flat works as good as upright? 14.5" is long enough to fit a 20lb turkey? I always see them upright but don't know if there is a real reason for it.

Yes. Fry with the breast down.

In fact when we started frying them in the early 80s there was no such thing as a “turkey frying” pot. We fried them in our crawfish pot (peanut oil was also freaking cheap). In the larger crawfish pot the turkey floats when it’s done (just like chicken) since it has room to move.

Well thats cool

I wound up pulling the trigger on the 40qt. I talked to them and they said they tested both out a few weeks ago with 20lb birds in each and both preformed pretty much the same.

I have a 120qt from them that I could have swapped out the triple jets a banjo burner but that would take a ton of oil lol. I think the 40 will be good and I can use it to make other stuff outside.

I was in Costco earlier today and saw they are now getting around $50 with tax added for their 4.5 gallon container of Peanut Oil.

The price of the oil has gotten out of hand.

Tell me about it. I do most of the grocery shopping for the house and 90+% of the cooking so I know what things are costing today.

I can remember buying that size container at Rouses for $27 out the door.
