Never had ice form on the outside at the level of the propane while boiling?

Not that I have noticed.

That's what I do, just wondering of there was a better way.

Put it in a tub of water.
If using 2 pots use the hot water from the first boil.

The only time I have seen propane tanks freeze on the outside is when the tank is low. It never really affected my boiling though.

are you not using a regulator?

That happens when the volume of the propane coming out of the bottle is greater than it can handle. This usually often happens when the air temperature is a little cooler and you use a large burner with a small bottle.
The best thing to do is go buy a 10 gallon bottle. This is a good size because they never freeze up and you don't need a forklift to put it in your car to get it filled. If you don't want to do that, you can put the bottle in a tub of water. You'll have to change the water after a while because it'll get ice cold and the bottle still may freeze.

make sure to have the right regulator and bottle size to match the burner being used

Ive always just hosed them off. I have put a black sweatshirt on one and put it in the sun before and that worked as well. We sometimes freeze up 25 gallon tanks when we're cooking alot and using the hose seems to be the only way with those.

The flow rate coming out of the bottle is too high if the bottles are freezing up, change the settings on the regulator.
