What is this board's opinion of Aldi grocery stores?

We have two that opened here a couple months ago. One is about a half mile from my house. People rave about it. I stopped in yesterday and just don't get the attraction. Poor selection off brand items and just seems cluttered and unorganized.

It's like welfare trader joes isn't it? Never been to Aldi, but I'm not the biggest fan of trader joes. I don't like prepackaged stuff.

I’ve never been in one, but the lady likes to order a bunch of random stuff from there via instacart.

That's what I've heard, but never been.
I like Trader Joe's for a few things, but their offerings aren't really aimed at folks trying to stay on a relatively low carb diet. Their riced cauliflower is the best I've tried though.

I went into one when we were in North Carolina a couple of years ago. It was alright, I guess. Kind of small. If there was one in BR, I don't know if I would go there much.

Great low carb TJ items:
Bacon
Cauliflower Rice
Cheese
Chili Lime Seasoning (very good sprinkled over the rice)
21 Seasoning seasoning
Green Dragon Hot Sauce
Jalapeno Sauce
And my favorite low carb TJ item, Norwegian Crisp Bread. Take one and break it up into piece and put on a cheese plate. 3 net carbs that provide a great tasting crunch.
ETA: Also, Aldi has a new zero net carb bread. Get the multigrain and toast it.
I wouldn't gorge on it if on Keto, etc. because some of the fiber could potentially be soluable.

Useless as an everyday store though

The US Aldis aren't very impressive. I have one close to me I stop at every couple of years just to see if theyve improved. The Euro Aldis are much nicer and have a wider selection.

Trader Joe's seems a lot cooler than it actually is, for me at least. The wide selection of unique products seems awesome, but they are so hit or miss as far as execution.
I do agree the cauli-rice stir fry is good stuff though.

They've built new store in Ohio which are very nice. Definitely some good buys in there.

I go to Aldis for milk, eggs, canned items, chips, etc. We have a farmer market style store up here called Fresh Thyme that has the best produce and it’s also the cheapest. They are right across the street from each other so between the two about the only grocery stores I go to

Been one time. Just saw a ton of knockoff foods in packages that look almost like the name brands. Not very impressed, in general. It does seem to have a cult following, though.

I'm not bored enough to read about it again, but you can find on Google some story about the original German Aldi, which was opened by two brothers. Somehow or another, the brothers had a falling out and split into two different Aldi stores, one of which eventually became Trader Joe's here in the US. Supposedly the products at Aldi and TJ are sourced from the same suppliers, just with different brand labels.

The father owned Aldi in Germany. The brothers allegedly got in a fight as to whether they should keep selling cigarettes or not.
The divided the stores in the north and south of Germany. As they expanded they agreed not to compete in other countries as well, hence Aldi and Tradrr Joe's being different style markets.

Aldi has off brand girl scout cookies, that taste exactly like real girl scout cookies, if you like those. For less than 2$ per package.
Otherwise, its great for produce, bread, milk, eggs (79 cents!), and common meat (gr beef, chicken, ribs, etc...)
Their off brands are hit or miss, but the price difference is pretty significant. Enough to where we go to Aldi for "snacks", produce, dairy, and some meat. And HEB for everything else. BUT, my Aldi is on the way to HEB, so it's an easy stop.

Good wine and beer selection in rural MO. Decent prices on meat. Drive 15 miles once a week for Aldi’s

Been in them several times in the UK, have never been in one in the US.
Not a fan at all.

Went to Aldi once and will not be back. I thought it was really weird not to give me grocery bags.
