Armour Thyroid vs Synthroid

Anyone take Armour thyroid instead of Synthroid??
Recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism - my doctor put me on Armour thyroid, actual dessicated pig thyroid hormone. I know nothing about thyroid replacement and several people have told me that the pig thyroid is outdated and I should be on Synthroid, a synthetic. After checking out the Google, it looks like Armour T3 and T4 and synthetic only has T4 - I think these are 2 types of hormones the thyroid gland produces. Curious of anyone's experience with the Armour.

Your Thyroid produces almost exlusively T4(close to 15:1 T4 to T3) and the body converts it into T3 in the muscle and organs. T3 is the active hormone and it what the medication cytomel is. But T3 tends to cause hypothyroidism as it is absorbed very rapidly in the body. Great for bodybuilders looking for fat loss but not good for long term application.
Synthroid allows your body to more closely mimic the natural process. Armour Thyroid is a 4.25:1 T4 to T3 ratio which many feel is just too high and can cause problems long term.
I don't have expierence with either or any other Thyroid medication other then some of the ones that come in over the counter fat burners which can't compare to the real thing, but I would say based on how the medications work and how the body works that you would be better off using sythroid over the long term.

Damn 777 did you know that off the top of your head? Cause that’s pretty spot on but I definitely would not have remembered those ratios
Almost everyone I see takes Synthroid or it’s generic, but a few take one of the “natural” products like Armour

yea, i remember stupid pointless shite lol. My wife was getting told she needed this like 2 years ago so i researched it. I knew most of it already but didn;t know about Armour until i had looked it up back then. Rest i knew just from studies anatomy and how hormones work in the body etc for learning and understand diets/supplements/training.

Pretty bang on 777. I don't know why I'm surprised you know so much about thyroid function, because you tend to know so much about the body in general, but in the last year I've had to learn a lot. One caveat to this is if your body is not properly converting T4 to T3, taking a T3 hormone or dessicated thyroid, which has a higher amount of T3, will help elevate the T3 levels.

Mine goes hyper. Can't find anyone to tell me why. They tried a med, but it went hypo. Good luck. My thyroid makes me feel like death everyday. I have the antibodies for graves and hasimoto(sp?)

I have Hashi's also. Yes when it's flaring up it is really shite.

It’s whatever works. The Armor Thyroid is what they used before they could tweak it. I started on the generic Synthroid (Levothyroxine) but swapped to the name brand when my numbers would not come down. Good luck.

Maybe try consulting a functional medicine specialist if your budget allows. They will likely do a more detailed thyroid workup earlier on and might be able to help if you are feeling terrible. I don’t have thyroid issues, but do go for another autoimmune issue and it isn’t cheap as insurance doesn’t cover it. I hope you figure it out.

JESUS i hate this mindset. Their is nothing different between name brand and generic. SPecifically they are coming from the same god damn factory in CHina. The company takes that powder, performs geometric dillution with a filler and makes the pill/medicine.
Both generic and name brand have to meet fda standards for purity.
BOTTOMLINE IS NAME BRAND IS A WASTE OF MONEY AND YOU ARE PAYING EXTRA FOR THE R&D THAT WENT INTO THE PRODUCT, NOT A SUPERIOR PRODUCT.

I went to an endocrinologist. You mean like that?

No, although I would keep seeing your endocrinologist as well. Functional medicine usually revolves around a bunch of blood tests, stool tests, and other home tests that detect heavy metal levels and then prescribe a treatment plan of lifestyle changes and supplementation that targets the root cause. In your case they would also work with your endocrinologist to get you the right amount of thyroid hormone as well. Unfortunately, these tests are not covered by insurance and can get pricy, so if you don’t have any room in the budget, I wouldn’t recommend it. However, I think they would be able to help if you are really feeling sub optimal. There are a few in Houston, and I’m sure you could Google to find one in your area. Just an idea if nothing else seems to work. At least something to do a little research on to see if it’s right for you.

777 you'd hate most any of the Hashi's/autoimmune facebook groups. My lord there's so much pseudoscience bullshite on there, and nonstop whining.

I am going to stick with the Armour and see what happens. Hopefully, I'll start feeling like my old self soon. If not, I'll ask for a switch.

I'm on armour and she just upped it to 60mg. I feel better in the way of fatigue/energy. My husband takes synthroid (different doctor) and I've noticed that he's not appearing as tired all the time although he says he doesn't feel different.
She explained why she uses armour but I couldn't repeat it --- I just take it as I'm told 30-60 minutes before eating and not with other mess.
