How do CrossFit gyms justify their membership prices?

I just moved to Midlothian, TX for work and the nature of my job is fairly sedentary in regards to physical activity and exertion. I’m 30 and weigh 185 lbs, but I can see my metabolism slowing down and couple that with the nature of my job, I would like to head that off and get more active. I think CrossFit would be good for me.
I emailed the gym about their membership fees and they emailed back that it’s $199 a month and $189 a month if you’re a veteran, or police, ems, firefighter, etc.
I just didn’t even bother emailing back, that seems crazy to me. Is that normal?

In before wait until you need to see an orthopedist.
That price is crazy tho.

I’m not a CrossFit person and am happy to pay for my cheap gym membership, but I can see how a good CrossFit gym can justify $200 a month. If classes are small, there is a knowledgeable coach/personal trainer there (which I think many CrossFit boxes have), and you are someone who thrives in a group settings with coaches I can see how it’s worth it. Also, that price may allow them to provide more individual attention by limiting class size.
The value will also depend on if you actually use it. If you went 4 days a week that’s only about $12 a day.

I paid 165 per month a few years ago and would assume its up to that level now woth inflation. You have to look at it as getting a trainer included. They set up workouts and work with you if you need any feedback. I really liked the gym I went to. When I decided to get my own garahe gym, I still got a few private training from the owner. I can see how it'd be frustrating to pay that much for bad "coaches".

A good gym will provide hands on coaching and legit programming.
If thats important to you, then it is pretty justifiable.
If it is not, just go to a normal gym.
Although I will say that $200 per month is pretty expensive. Most around here are in the $120-$150 range.

That sounds like what I'd expect to pay for a full access membership to "box" in that area. Just make sure it's full access(and by that I mean unlimited number of classes and no restriction on when those classes are), and to answer your question, "How do they justify that price?" As others have mentioned, it's a fully, 100% coached environment. If you sign up, and attend classes, there will be at least one, if not more, coaches running the class. 100%
If you're really interested, it's worth asking if they do any kind of free into sessions. Just tell them you're not sure about the price and you want to "test drive" their place out. Most boxes have something on their pricing plans they can work out with you, if not an outright free session or two so you can assess their coaches, facility, equipment, etc.

No way I would pay that.
Even Planet Fitness, not to mention a real gym, in addition to this board can accomplish any goal you want.

I wish you could do barbell free weights at Planet Fitness but you can still get a good workout there

$300 a month where I live, $200 seems like a steal

$125-$250 in the BR area with Iron Tribe the $250.

I thought $100 for Lifetime was a lot.
They have their version of CrossFit in their own private area called Alpha and it’s free to members.
I’ve been to both and it’s the exact thing plus a million other amenities

I’m with you. Their prices are crazy.
I pay $33/month for Anytime Fitness. I can workout all over the country and the world. I’ve been in around 30+ AF gyms including Tahoe, Maui, Inverness, Scotland, Rome, and will get to workout in Barcelona and Granada, Spain, in March.

A lot of Crossfit gyms are group/class setting with a coach and programming and all that jazz. You’re paying for more than just access to a gym. With that said, its worth is up to you.

A good CrossFit gym with coaching and programming is worth that. You’re paying a premium for someone to watch you move and help you scale workouts a hour a day 6 days a week. When you break it down on a per class basis that is dirt cheap.
It’s not for everyone but you’re paying a premium to weed out all the not serious people and the chaos of the conventional gym. There’s a reason planet fitness is $10 a month.

I pay that for my gym although agree it seems a lot for only CrossFit. Like someone else said, Lifetime’s Alpha is similar plus you get everything else resort-like.

$199 a month
That's a little pricey. My CrossFit gym charges $140 per month, but I pay yearly, which knocks it down to $115 per month. If I ever have to cancel, they'll refund me the remaining unused amount.
I'm pretty lucky. There are an abundance of quality coaches, classes, the people there are great, and it has 24/7 access (I pay an additional $25 per month for that perk).
I wished I would have joined a CrossFit place years ago. It will kick your arse, but then again, why go and workout if you're not trying to burn calories/build muscle/tone up.

the 199 is not bad if, and big if as there is lots of variance between boxes, your coach understands and helps with a couple things
1) programming, and im not talking just the class setting. the good ones will have novices on an LP, then 10-12 min metcon. they take the tactical guys like police and firefighters and put them in a class that is similar to the old crossfit football or Power athlete model. they take their hs athletes and put them on a cf football programming model after running them through a basic LP, then a weekly lp version.
2) nutrition- they should be providing some for of nutrition coaching. not specific foods but more macros and guidelines to help you reach your goal
3) coaching, specific to your weaknesses and tailoring programming to the level you are
open gym time is another big thing. overall though if its a good gym, you should be paying for the above plus to be around highly motivated people. CF isnt my thing but if done correctly can be a great thing, done wrong...and it sucks.

Can you talk a little more about that? I'd like to cut an additional 10 lbs. and kind of hold right around that weight. Cleaning things up a bit should help me get there.

not really as it comes down to simple calories and protein in the end. cleaning it up usually can result in lower calories.
so i would use this calculator to start
LINK
instead of standard, select lean gains calculator
start tracking using myfitnesspal and weighing you foods. atleast for now. try and hit those macros listed for 14-15 days straight then adjust based on weight loss.
we want to be in slight caloric deficit and lose about 1-1.5lbs per week if you are CFing. keep protein high at all times. measure around naval and track that measurement too.
