Rice + Beans = Complete Protein?

The best solution to this problem is to mix and match your plant-based sources, often with whole grains, so that you're getting the full spectrum of amino acids your body needs to function. There are ways to eat a vegetarian or vegan diet and still receive all nine essential amino acids, by combining beans with grains (so you get both methionine and lysine, as well as the other amino acids), or through other variations.
This is where rice and beans come in. Rice and beans are, separately, both incomplete proteins; but when they're eaten together, they're considered complementary proteins, according to the FDA.
When consumed together, each provides the amino acids that the other lacks. Rice doesn't have enough lysine, but beans do. Meanwhile, rice has high levels of the amino acid methionine, which beans lack.
Together, rice and bean dishes become complete protein examples. The same can be said for peanut butter and whole wheat bread, which explains why both of these dishes can be incredibly filling without meat.
I'm not advocating eliminating meat, but has anyone else heard this? Been eating brown rice and various beans for a while now along with some chicken.

sure but the amino acid profile still isnt great
and drop the brown rice. White rice is better in every single way.

Most of my meals during the week are beans and rice but I always have a meat in it. Sausage, beef, or chicken

When did Rice become a protein?

Not what my dietician said. I need the fiber and while there isn't much difference, there's still a difference.

then find a new one, one that knows wtf they are talking about.
ask them exactly what is better about brown than white, tell them to show you the study reporting what they say. report back.

yea difference is brown has arsenic in it, white doesnt
white is digested much much easier
white is much easier to cook
nutrition wise, almost identical and you are majoring in the minors if you are worried about that
same with worrying about if rice and beans are complete protein or not
just get 1g per lbs of bodyweight overall and you dont have to worry about all this.

There's nothing totally wrong with white rice. I prefer brown for most dishes, but will still eat white rice. I would say maybe transitioning to quinoa is a lot more of a difference than comparing brown and white rice.

I can do that. Love quinoa anyway.

I've heard that, but it's not exactly true. Neither are missing an essential amino acid that the other provides.
The left column is a cup of black beans, the middle column is a cup of brown rice and the right column is the total of the two.

And no, beans do not replace real animal protein

You don’t need fiber unless you are crushing carbs.

I’ve heard that corn and beans are a complete protein. I didn’t realize rice would as it’s pretty much exclusively glucose, right?
Either way, I don’t really care if they do or not. The amount of it you have to eat to hit 150+ grams of protein per day is absurd. It’s challenging to do if you’re on a calorie deficit, and most people - especially me - can’t handle the gastrointestinal impact of so many beans.

I’m not suggesting replacing protein with rice and beans, but if I’m having to hit carb and fiber numbers, using a combo that also provided additional protein boost would be nice.

your rite they are essentially identical except digestion of brown rice is dog shite compared to white rice for most people. Brown rice also contains arsenic.
brown rice tends to cause allergy issues and tends to block the absorption of many of the micronutrients
as far as protein.....

In summary, this systematic review and meta-analysis have found that animal protein tends to have a more favorable effect on lean mass compared to plant protein, and the benefit appears more pronounced in younger adults.

“according to the FDA”
The FDA is in bed with the food industry just as much as they are with Pharma.
Advice from dietitians is generally not to be trusted either. The American Academy of Nutition and Dietetics controls education and licensing of dietitians in the U.S.
Majority of their funding comes from the food industry.
