I have 7.5 acres that I'll be building on soon. Need it mowed every month or so until we move.

What's a fair price. I was quoted $450/month. I think I can do better.

Thoughts?

I assume since you’re not living there yet you don’t need it to be manicured to perfection, just grass cutting. If so, $450 a month for that is high in my opinion. A regular zero turn mower would get it done in probably a couple hours or less. Depending on how many obstacles are there.

I was paying $200/month 12 years ago for 4.4 acres with very few trees. That price may not be as out of line as you think, depending on terrain, obstacles, etc.

Is it pasture you’re trying to get cut? If so ask the person cutting if you can trade the hay for the cut

Will need more information about the property.

Why do you need it mowed? Is it just grass/pasture, or is it brush? Do you plan to keep up the full 7.5 acres once you build?

I don’t expect you want it manicured, so no need to get a yard service to cut it with zero turn type equipment. If it’s brush, pay once for it to be mulched/cleared, then you can just bush hog it as needed. It’s it a nice, smooth, grass field find a tractor service with a large finishing mower to cut it once a month. $450 doesn’t seem like a terrible price though.

Unless there’s some outside factor, I’d suggest just spending the money once when you plan to build to prep the area.

I'd say it's a fair price. That's calculating based on 2.5 acres per hour with a tractor at $150 an hour. I'm guessing this a fully insured company and not the neighborhood handy man right?

Usually you can see $15-20/acre per cut. So that price is right in line

Thanks for the replies.

The land has been cleared, and several trees remain.
It slopes from front to back to a creek, so it's not flat. Probably an elevation change of 5 feet or so.

Just looking to get it bush-hogged every so often so that we can see where the stakes are, etc. Not looking to get it manicured at all.

Some information to ponder. In the lawn care business, "growing season" is approximately from March 15 to November 15, and lawns are cut weekly. If your 7.5 acre property or lot is cut bi-monthly @ $450 per month, that's a fair price. Mowing the property 1x a month in June, July, Aug is gonna be a bitch unless the person is using a tractor and bush hog. If you have an open field out in the country and not concerned about how well manicured it is, counter-offer @ $300 a month.

edit: I was typing and didn't see your reply above. For just bush hogging, offer $300 and see what he says.

That’s a fair price. It will take 2-3 hours to cut that. If you’re doing it every month it will take longer since the grass will be high. You’ll need a tractor to cut it if doing monthly. If doing it every 2 weeks you can use a zero turn that goes faster. I’m in the same spot and I was quoted $500 for 2 cuts a month on zero turn mowers

A zero turn can do it but it has to be done twice a month minimum. Problem is when you get a rain spell and can’t mow until week 3. That 3 hour mow turns into an all day slugfest fast. Then you are dealing with high cuttings so plan on mowing again in 7 days because if you wait 2 weeks it is just as bad.

Speaking from experience. Have a Hustler commercial mower. We had 4 acres investment property I dealt with for a few years. 6 years ago before we sold it a local guy with a box cutter quoted me $50 an acre.

If you’re spending that money you could just buy yourself a tractor or ztr and do it yourself. You’ll save money over time. Once you move you will need equipment to keep it up. Spend the money now and save the money you would be spending paying someone to do it.

For that much money you could buy a hell of a tractor and come out ahead

So, the person you’re hiring will be cutting 7.5 acres once per month? I wouldn’t pay $450 for that.
