About to replace roof. Advise me on which shingles to use.

I’ve seen comments that architectural shingles are far superior to 3 tab. Roofers, contractors, experienced homeowners, give me more information, please.

I hope you’re not doing that yourself. I put my own shingles on an 15x15 shed and it was fricking brutal. I gained a whole new respect for those Mexican roofers

No, I’m not. I did the majority of the labor in re-shingling my grandparents’ roof when I was in my early twenties. Never again.

Im doing the same thing right now. My roofer told me that most shingles are about the same. However, youtube has several reviews of shingles by different manufacturers, and at least in those videos, some products rated higher than others. I am leaning towards the OC TruDefinition Duration series, primarily because that is the product my roofer primarily uses. It seems to have good ratings at least. It is really quite confusing and I certainly do not understand what voids the warranty, etc. For example, I have a sprayed foamed roof deck, and that appears to void the warranty. However, that is not clear from the warranty specs on the website, and it appears the different brands have different policies, but I have yet to find a consolidated summary between brands.
On a related topic, I have been told by several different people (not roofers), that the shingles hold up better if hand nailed rather than if they are installed with the use of a nail gun. Does anyone know if this is true and if I should ask my roofer to have his guys hand nail the shingles?

We did the Pinnacle Pristine with Scotchgard to protect from the algae streaks (not sure if a problem where you live). Behind my house are 4 new builds built around the same time. Two are black and streaky on North side. Two look like they were built yesterday. I don’t know if other brands have the same type, but this is what we went with. Last three houses on my street got the same in 2016 and still look as good as mine that was done in 2020.
ETA: when I was researching, OC had great reviews and people on here said they were good.

GAF, Owens-Corning or Atlas if you are in Louisiana. We install GAF 80%, 15% Atlas and the rest OC. All have stain guard, atlas is branded with scotch guard name etc. Currently GAF has an unlimited wind warranty on their HDZ shingle if you use their felt buster and other components with the roof for their complete system, which is pretty standard. That’s the direction I would and did go on my personal house on the coast in alabama.

I second this. That stuff works as advertised.

Roofing contractor here. We only install Atlas Pinnacle Pristine. Hail nail being better than gun nail is bs. So long as the guys continually monitor their gun pressure it’s way better. Just think…guy in the AM swinging a hammer vs same guy swinging the hammer in the late afternoon after swinging a hammer all day and baking in Louisiana sun. You really think he’s going to have quality hits?
Owens Corning may be good but their warranty is absolute garbage. Has a client who had defective shingles from OC. We made a claim and they agreed that the shingles are bad and via the warranty should be replaced. The gave him like a 4K credit for the shingles and that’s it. No nails, no underlayment, no hip and ridge, no labor, nothing. So they admitted their shingles were bad but only paid for the shingles and not everything else that goes into replacing the roof.

Lol that’s complete bullshite bud. You are dealing with freaking roofers. You actually think they monitor the air pressure thru out the day to make sure the air pressure is correct. Rather my roof be hand nailed( which is happening right now) and told my roofer he has to hand nail my shingles. His reply was f.ck nail gun. All his roofs are hand nailed.

Haha sure they are. He’d have no roofers if all his roofs were hand nailed. It’s a hard enough job before starting the nailing. Then tack on hand nailing…on every roof…yea not gonna happen. He told you whatever you wanted to hear

Pre Ida my company had roofs hand nailed. We were a late hold out. After Ida, nobody would do it and I had to go gun nailed to get labor. Swinging hammers is a thing of the past.....
For shingles, Frick Atlas, I like CertainTeed.
I think consumer reports has the most in depth shinglr reviews. Basically shingles are all about weight. If you get heavy shingles that are 4 packs to a square, every brand ranks higher than the 3 bundles per square shingles. So it's a you get what you pay for type situation.

quote:Good for you then, someone like me appreciates that. My job had zero gringo oversight except for me, and they fkn pissed me off. I should've known better than to do business with a dude (gringo company, came recommended) that has a bible verse airbrushed on his tailgate.

I went CertainTeed - they're made in Shreveport.

I did the same. Excellent shingles, they are made by Atlas. When we bought the house in 2000, it had a relatively new roof with the best Atlas had at the time. I neve had real issues with roof but decided to replace it in 2018, shortly after a hail storm.
Almost all the roofing companies I got quotes from recommended the Atlas shingles in general and the Pinnacles in particular.

Lol well I know for a fact he has 6 nailers and 2 laborers on his crew. So it doesn’t look like he is struggling to find help. Some of His guys had been with him for 10 years now. They tacking my roof right now. He is backed up for 2 months on jobs. 90% of his customers want their roof hand nailed.

I just had my roof replaced like 3 weeks ago. It was definitely hand nailed. I didn't even ask for it. Was just how they worked. I'm in the North Houston suburbs.
