Advice related to accidental property damage

A neighbor's kid, maybe 6 or 7 years old, ran into my garage on their bike and has caused around $1,000 in damage while we were not home. We don't know the family, but they did reach out to share what had happened. I also have it on a security video. Long story short, they don't want to pay once we got the expensive quote. We're still doing some back and forth, but I'm looking for thoughts on how to proceed and not let this get stale. Any thoughts on best ways to proceed with the repair and recovering the costs?
At this time, we only have one quote on the repair. I've never had a situation like this so definitely looking for help and maybe any cautionary tales from the board.

What kind of people reach out to share what happened then refuse to pay for repair?? Trashy imo
If the quote you got is too expensive for them, see if they want to propose an alternative repair person/company to get a quote from?
I wouldn't threaten legal until last resort. I'd wonder if it's going to be worth it for $1000

Nobody has insurance with a deductible that low.
If they don’t want to pay, you can sue. Is it worth it? For a business, defiantly. For a neighbor? Probably not.

Get some more quotes. Wife had hit ours a couple years ago and we had to replace the whole bottom panel/piece. It was around $600.

Would splitting the cost hurt you financially? If they don't want to pay, I would ask for them to get pricing. If they still don't want to pay or cooperate, I would at least offer to split the cost.
I know that's shitty, but sometime life isn't fair. Suing your neighbor over less than $1000 doesn't sound fun.

just fix your house dude. Were you never a kid? shite happens. I can’t believe you are even entertaining making them pay for it

Maybe they can't. They sound like honest people, but maybe they don't have the money to pay for it.

Make the kid cut your lawn and pay half

If they own their home. You could file a liability claim w their home owners insurance. The video evidence should be enough to get you paid.

Get another quote and see if they’re willing to split it. If not, ask how much were they willing to pay, since they obviously feel some responsibility. Take whatever they’re willing to pay, even if it’s $0, get it fixed, and move on.

There is no deductible on a liability claim.

What did they run into? The garage door, the wall, what was it? I'm assuming the door since it's $1,000 in damage.
I'd explain to the neighbor that you'll report it to your homeowners insurance company and let them handle it. That way, when they inevitably come after your neighbor through subrogation, you're not the bad guy. Give them another chance to pay and if they don't, tell them you'll have no choice but to let your insurance company handle it.

If you can afford to fix it yourself, ask your neighbor what they want to do to make it right and you whole.
Put the ball in their court, be prepared to pay the $1,000 yourself. It’s your neighbor, and not that much money to fight over.

Definitely not planning to go this route. I'm leaning towards getting one more quote. The original quote was from someone that I trust, and it didn't seem outlandish given the damages.

I've got to replace at least three sections of the door. Haven't factored in any additional costs around painting and what not, considering the older panels are going to be slightly faded from the sun compared to any new panels.

No way I'd make a $1,000 repair I'm not responsible for out of pocket and just call it a day. If my kid caused that much damage to someone else's house, I'm paying it every single time because that's the standard I have for myself, and I'm not about to just throw that out the window and swallow my pride because someone else is being a dick.
Odds are the OP and his neighbor will never be close friends because even if they end up making this right, they're to the point now where it's too awkward. The chances of any real relationship there are next to nothing now. If it were me, I'd get another estimate, give them the opportunity to pay for it, and if they don't, turn it over to my insurance company and let them handle the rest.

Dude I will end up fixing my house whether it's my money or theirs. If my kid goes to their house and damages their property, I'm going to pay the damages and punish the kid. There's nothing wrong for me to expect the same from my neighbors, much less others.

Door. Need to replace over half the panels on it.
