Just letting everyone know, my back yard with centipede/bermuda mix was loaded with armyworms. I applied some bifen with my backpack sprayer and also put down some spectrazide granular. You may want to check your lawn and see if you have them, it doesn't take but a few days to wreck a lawn.

They've been marching here in North AL for a couple of days now.

Just a reminder to check back in a week or so once you killed them because there's a good chance a neighbor also has them and they can come back, if you only spray. If you put down a granular that lasts awhile thats a different story. I like to spray for anything mild and then if its major I'll drop a granular, water it in, and then spray. I always feel like spray kills them faster.

I usually put down granular Bifen once at the end of April then another application at the end of July to last me through the end of year. My yard consists of St. Aug. If I don’t do this every year, they will wreck havoc in my yard.

They're starting on my St. Aug lawn in Metairie.
In previous years, I used Spectracide Triazicide. Is that still recommended?
Are there any temperature restrictions?

I just bought some Sevin Insect Killer granules and BioAdvanced Spray (Cyfluthrin). Went with the Sevin because it has both Zeta-Cypermethrin and Bifen in it. Going to spray the BioAdvanced today or tomorrow as an extra precaution to make sure I knock them out. Came home from vacation to a lawn that appeared to mow itself…and I’ve been spraying Talstar all summer too.

FWIW I used that spectracide last year as a precaution and a few weeks later my lawn got destroyed by insects, it didn’t do shite. I’ve given up, the VBW and insects have been ruthless the past few years here on the Northshore.

Expensive but I used grubex and it destroyed the armyworms. My yard was infested, but it did a much better job than everything I used last season.

Well damn, I just bought a new bottle today so I feel like I'm committed to it.

Does anybody know if I can get away with applying it right now with these temperatures?
Tonight's forecast remains over 80 degrees, except for an hour or two around 5 am, when it is expected to drop down to 80.

I would….or the armyworms will wreck your lawn anyway.

FYI if you check your windows and soffit in June/July you’ll see their clusters of eggs and you can smash them. I had 8-10 clusters. Probably a few thousand army worms and I killed them before they hatched.

If you have a bad infestation, they are extremely easy to spot. They are bright green and are on the tops of your grass blades when eating. I could easily see hundreds of them when I walked my backyard. They were much easier to spot with the sun shining.

I caught them before they made it to the side of the house or the front, but I treated the entire lawn. So far so good. I’m sure I’ll have another bout with them before winter.

I'll tip my hat to the little bastards, they've done a better job on the grass in my side driveway than Roundup ever has. Of course, they didn't stop there. Sheeesh......I'm glad I'm not a lawn guy. The Mockingbirds and Bluebirds have been having a feast the past few days, though.
