Looks like we may need to replace our ac unit this year. What kind of average would a 4 ton unit run?

The whole thing?

Really depends on the brand and sear rating. Carrier will be more expensive that just about any others.

18 seer will be 8-10k

I put in two last year.

I would beg you to not get Goodman. I had three and as I said replaced 2. Have had nothing but trouble with them.

Edit to correct seer. Mine two new ones are 18.

21 is a good bit more

Yea it’s an r22 unit, the inside needs to be placed so the outside will have to be too. Probably will go 14 seer bc we will be selling soon.

If no ductwork then you are looking at 7-8k.

I've got someone coming out next Tuesday to replace mine and it is a 4 ton unit. The unit currently in the house was installed when I bought the house in 92 and I had to have the outside condenser unit replaced after Katrina in 06.

I'm getting a 4 ton 14 SEER Trane unit installed for $6,500.

They are removing and replacing both inside and outside units and tying in the existing duct work.

I wanted to get this done before the heat of summer hits and pushing my luck with such an old unit.

ETA: Went with the 14 SEER unit since I will be selling this house when my wife finally retires and we are moving rural.

$1500-$2000 per ton is about average for just the unit and reusing existing ductwork

go with a 16 seer. An 18 or over doesn't really equate money spent to money saved. 17 seer is negligible.

It really just depends on who you have do the work, and if gas or electric.

I'm assuming you're not just replacing the condenser.

Most of the prices in this thread seem high to me. I just replaced a 5 ton coil and condenser with a 16 seer for $5600 out the door.

When you say "coil and condenser" is that just the A/C coil and not the gas/electric heater too or is it the entire new unit both heat and A/C plus the outside condenser unit?

That's what I was thinking. A complete swap out of all equipment would definitely be more.

Look into possible rebates from the gas company by switching to a gas furnace heat vs. heat pump

It’s a pretty easy job OP, I’d highly recommend calling 5-6 companies to get quotes. There’s a huge profit margin on units, you can often times find someone that really wants your business and quotes you low. I wouldn’t doubt if you call 5 companies you get quotes from $5500-11,000 or more. One or two will likely try to rip you off.

Mine was just the AC and not the furnace/blower.

The OP said HVAC and then later said AC so it is unclear if he needs the furnace or just the ac.

My current unit is electric heat. It’s the attic condenser that’s in pretty bad shape.
