centipede is terrible.

Especially if you don’t take of it properly

First two years I had it I used the normal weed and feed on it and it wrecked my lawn

Finally decided to learn how to actually take care of it, and it’s crushing butts this summer so far. Most of bare spots are starting to fill in.

But at the end of the day we didn’t have a choice when we bought the house

The builder gave everyone centipede and we got lucky compared to the homes built a few months after who got terrible turf.

I can also tell a huge difference between the sod I bought and the builder put down since my lot wasn’t fully soded.

The Sta Green organic 16-0-10 fert has done wonders for my yard

Also buying high quality raw seed has been great this summer

Buying that shite from Scott’s is like 85% inert matter

Mostly just re seeded the bare spots I had fricked up from stressing the lawn out with to much nitrogen over and over that eventually died off

Also in areas my kids fricked up

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t get the results from Scott’s products.

The patch product does work kinda

I also threw Pennington seed with tifblair on top of the Scott’s patch master in my back yard and I’m getting a ton of germination these last couple weeks. We got rain non stop the last two weeks

My front which i basically did a renovation on. I tilled up all these spots that could never grow shite. Put tifblair raw seed down as well as the mix with Pennington. This was back in mid May. I’ve got a ton of new grass and the runners are going everywhere. Hopefully by the end of summer it will be close to filled in.

I just put some Gulf kist raw seed down yesterday in an area that the kids trampoline had been over the last two years and was pretty bare. Put the left over seed around spots that had germinated recently.

This is the only big box fert I would reccomend for centipede (besides straight ams if available)

It’s a solid product that doesn’t use MOP as it’s potassium source.

My apologies I should have been more clear. I’m talking about their fertilizer. Their other products I’m sure are fine that you’ve had good luck with. I’ve got friends that swear by their fertilizer, but all the stores around here seem to have 29% nitrogen in it even when it says it’s for southern grasses. When I’ve grown centipede, zoysia, or St Augustine that’s a bit strong. Now bermuda loves high nitrogen.

I prefer centipede over others. I hit it with some weed & feed a couple times each year and it looks great.

Yea Scott’s doesn’t make anything good for taking care of centipede

My dumbass used the triple action or regular weed and feed the first few years

The Sta Green 16-0-10 is where it’s at

Never tried that brand but you seem really high on it so I’ll try some one day if I see it in a store I frequent. Fertilome is another brand I’ve had friends say they really like. That Lesco Professional 15-0-15 with 2% Iron has always been good to me. I’d venture to say any quality homogenized time release fertilizer from a quality brand should work with good results. But for some reason I just haven’t had as good of results with Scott’s. Some of my buddies swear by it, but me personally I’ve tried it enough over decades that I hold a strong opinion on how it performed on a centipede yard for me. For the money there are cheaper brands that are of higher quality. I was looking for some grass seed the other day and that Scott’s was $88 a bag at both Lowe’s and Home Depot. At Home Depot the Lesco is $53. To me it’s a no brainer which one I’m not buying when I compare the two especially if it’s $38 per bag plus tax higher for Scott’s. For what it’s worth Lesco was purchased by John Deere Landscape around 2007 which are now called SiteOne Landscape Supply. If your brand ever becomes out of stock and you need an alternative to get you by in a pinch try the one I’m telling you about. Is it the best? Can’t say for certain. But for 90 days or longer I’m certain your centipede will look nice and green especially when that 2% iron kicks in. That Anderson’s Professional is another brand my neighbor utilized and his centipede looked great. Turned his centipede really green. I’ve never personally used it but I saw what I saw and it did wonders on his yard.

Any positive Centipede posters?
I am shocked by these replies. I love centipede. Bermuda is a weed everywhere but a golf course. Hate the stuff and the requirements to maintain a lawn.

I would say centipede is a weed in my Bermuda lawn, but it’s such a wimpy grass that it doesn’t try to mess with my Bermuda

Are you the same poster that always says that bermuda is a weed? You are entitled to your opinion even if it is wrong.

I'll be honest. That looks really good and I'm surprised. Centipede likes that 1-1.5 inch cut.

Yes, it is difficult to manage bermuda when planning vacations. I usually won't fert with 30 days of leaving so I'm not pushing too much top growth. I just had a 7 day vacation two weeks ago. I mowed it the day I left and sprayed it with iron. I reset the HOC to once notch lower when I got back and then hit it with 46-0-0 at 3lbs per thousand and it was recovered in 3 days.

Not trying to be a contrarian but Centipede is considered a weed in China and Asia in general. Same with Zoysia. Considered a weed. I import lumber for a living from primarily Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America. Throw Bermuda in that list of so called weeds. It’s all over parts of Africa, Malaysia, etc. What those countries consider weeds we like them here. Far as preference that’s beauty in the eye of the beholder.

Thanks. I'm actually experimenting with a little bermuda seeding project in my backyard right now. Like one of the other posters said, my whole neighborhood is centipede yards and I'm pretty sure I'd piss off the HOA if I converted to a nice deep green reel mowed bermuda in the front. So I'm just trying to dominate with reel mowed centipede instead.

I have stated it a lot. It's a weed anywhere but a golf course.

I cannot believe you take this stance on such a terrible turf grass for residential situations.
