Anyone have experience with and can recommend an Air filter service? Best price, free shipping, quality of filter, etc

Why do you need a service? Pick up a pack of of filters and change them once a month.

Convenience. If shipping is free and prices are competitive.

I use filterbuy.com. They send me filters on a schedule. I use the thick ones that you can't buy at HD.

For 1" thick filters that you change every 3 months, Nordic Pure on Amazon is really good quality and at a low price if you buy them in 6 packs or 12 packs to get the best price. We get Merv 8 as the best quality versus not harming your HVAC system from getting a Merv rating that is too high and restrictive to air flow.

Is there a way to find out what MERV rating your HVAC can handle? I wasn't sure if they mattered or not. We generally have always bought whatever is a class or two above the single month replacement filters.

Ideally, you want a filter with a MERV rating that reduces the static pressure (= resistance to airflow, measured with manometer) no more than 0.1 inches water column, that number increases with an increase in air flow across the filter which should range between 300 to 500 FPM (feet per minute). As I understand it, many manufacturers, but not all, supply that information on their websites for their filters, some may even provide that info on the filter wrapping.

For example, I’m using this Flanders 2 inch thick MERV 8 in one of my air return grills LINK and you can see the company provides the static pressure drop, when new, at an air flow of 300 and 500 FPM in their product literature, but that info isn’t on the filter. Flanders manufacturers good HVAC filters.

You may be causing your unit to work harder. A reputable HVAC tech said to get the cheap ones but change them 1x a month. He said avoid the "long life" or heavy duty ones.

Not any more than you need a reach around. Oh wait....

Judging by the comments here there are others that use a service as such. Maybe get off your Commadore 64 and come into the future with the rest of us.

There’s a filter place in Bossier, probably a few around where ever you are.

I believe he is referring to a 4" filter vs. 1" filter.
4" Merv 11 filter has more flow area than a 1" with equivalent rating due to the increased surface area.

I guess what I should be asking: is there a way to find out what my unit is currently capable of right now and if so, where do I find out? The furnace I have came with the house, so I have no idea what I'm looking for.

I went through a bunch of brands and finally landed on Nordic Pure that I buy on Amazon. They are very well constructed and a good price vs some of the others out there. Good value.

As far as a service, I don't necessarily get the appeal. I'd equate it to a service that ships me a roll of toilet paper every other day. Individually shipped filters seem like unnecessary overhead vs just buying a box of 6.

Doubt any of these places beat Home Depot. I think I pay $4 or $5 for 24x30

They make permanent metal ones don't they?

I believe they're quite a bit more expensive than the disposable ones, but you just wash them off to clean them and put them back in.
