Seeing good and bad reviews for most brands. Need some help.
I really only want to do one coat before paint.

Kiltz
Get the water base one.
The mineral base one’s fumes almost did me in even with all doors and windows open.
That was many years ago may be better now.

Good deal. I've always been a Kilz fan but some reviews had me questioning if something else is better.
Glad to hear from you guys. Kilz 2 it is!

Bullseye 123. A lot better than Kilz.

Whatever you do dont get Zinsser. Primed our ceiling with it recently and we almost had to get a hotel. It gassed off so bad we could smell what seemed like raw chemicals in the attic

The main thing is to simply coat the new drywall with enough primer to soak into the pores and provide for a decent canvas for your paint to go on so that the paint doesn't look streaky. It doesn't take a high-quality primer to achieve that result.

That's strange. I've used Zinsser for a lot of projects and haven't had any issues whatsoever. I wonder if you just got a lemon batch.

It was pretty bad... coulda been the batch I suppose but everything else about it seemed fine. Went on as intended, etc.. just had a crazy strong smell for about a day

Depending on what your finish coat color is you might could have the kilz tinted to a few shades lighter than the finish color.
It makes is easier to see where you have primed and also when you do the finish coat.
Dont do the same color though you just want the primer to get the color close, then the finish coat doesnt have to change from white to whatever...

Did you use 1-2-3 or CoverStain? The worst smell you get from 1-2-3 is ammonia. CoverStain is the strong solvent odor.
