Best step ladder height for home use?

12, 10, 8, 6 feet.
I’m talking for various projects: painting, hanging things, Christmas lights, light bulb changes, etc. Don’t want to go overkill and spend more than I need to.

I have 2, 4, 6, 8 and 14' step ladders and 18 and 24' extension ladders. Most used are my 6' and 18', 6' most useful inside, 18' extension is my go-to for anything outside on the house. My 18' is a 3-section so it's the same size as a 6' step ladder in storage. If I had to have one then I would keep my 8' Louisville extra heavy duty fiberglass step ladder.

How tall are your rooms? 1 story or 2? How tall are your gutters?
I bought a standard 6’ fiberglass and an 18’ AL multiposition when we bought this house. (1 story, 10-11 ft ceilings) I find myself using the 6’ more, simply because of weight, but I do pull the multi out a couple times a year. If I did it again, I would probably get an 8’ fiberglass and not skip a beat.
Edit:
Basically what Clames said.
I also ended up buying a smaller 3 step stool currently on sale for less than $30
that I use for most stuff inside (changing bulbs, air filters, etc…

I've got a little giant extendable multi position 6 foot that I like. Only downside is probably the weight, but im relatively young for my age

I have a regular 6' ladder, but I use this one 99% of the time. It's also perfect for the kids at Mardi Gras parades.

if you can only choose one, go with the 8. But man an 8 can suck moving it inside a house for some minor job.
Don't dismiss the "little giant" multi-use type ladders. I thought they were a gimmick until I bought one. Heavy as sin but pack up small and can be used as a step or extension.

Indoors or outdoors?
If indoors how tall are your ceilings?
If indoors and your ceilings are all 10' or under and you aren't a midget get a 6" aluminum (unless you are really hefty then get fiberglass). A 6' Al ladder is easy to move and setup. The taller you go (and going to fiberglass) the more unwieldy they get and the more furniture you have to move to set them up. I have a 16' stepladder for getting to bulbs in our 20' ceilings and it is a HUGE PITA to get in and out of the house, set up and broken down, and not break something in the process.

After I broke my 8 ft aluminum ladder, fell off, and got hit in the head by it...all due to my own negligence of not ensuring a level footing, I got the Little Giant M22 with leg levelers.
It can be a 6-10 ft step ladder or an extension ladder up to 22ft.
It is badass, but is also pretty heavy like others have said.

For indoor use, I have a Gorilla 6 foot ladder. It's great to have around and very easy to maneuver.
Too hard to say for outside. It all depends on the specifics of your house.

Get a little giant ladder. Mine extends to 17ft and handles any job I need around the house.

I’d get an 8. And a four.
I like the 8 because I dont like being near the top of a ladder

what's the highest you need to get? i am a huge proponent of latter safety but i'm lazy AF and would more likely grab a chair then a ladder in the shed. Therefore i have a few 3' and 4' ladders that fold thin that are stashed throughout the house for reaching most things along with a few 12" and 18" single step fold flat stools.
As far as a larger ladder, i would 100% go with a little giant. I can handle almost any job around my house with it, from unfolding it as an extension ladder to reach 16' high eves to keeping it A frame 5' to change light bulbs. Expensive and heavy but well worth it IMO.

THIS. I have the 13' Gorilla and the 22' Gorilla that I use for home and work. The 18' is perfect unless you need to get on a 2-story roof.

This is a great value and should cover most needs unless you have 12' ceilings or need a very tall ladder for outside
I'm planning to buy the 22' version soon

Recommend every home owner to have two. Lightweight Werner or Little Giant fiberglass and a Little Giant that can extend 20'+ if needed.

While generally I agree with this, if you have the biggest ladder you can, will you really go get it out of the garage or shed to change a light bulb that you could somehow stand on a stool to change? We’re only a safe as our most convenient option.
