distress painting Hardie Plank question

I have a thought to try to RE-Paint my Hardie Planked shop wall to look like barnwood/distressed wood, etc. It is currently a neutral tan paint color
Because Hardie has "grained texture" in the cement fiber board, I was wondering if it could be painted first, then comback with a darker color and sponge/wipe away to make the grooves in the grain darken?
Has anyone ever experimented with this before? looking for suggestions. I know stain will not work 1. its already painted 2. even new Hardie installs say paint only, no stain.
Thanks.

Try and give Legacy Prefinishing a call. We are building now and using them for our vertical lp siding (slate stain). Carolina Colortones shows the process on their website which could be of some help. Try giving them a call as well.
Both use a 2 application process.

These look like they are prefabricating the look onto the product?
I am asking about a process to achieve that look on already installed and painted hardie siding.

Maybe look at antique glaze. Put on and wipe off and the color you choose will stay in the cracks and grooves of the board. Just a thought.
