I have a pretty serious doveweed problem that seems to come from my neighbors, purple flowers all along my fence line. What’s the best control for this time of year in Lafayette and is there such thing as a pre emergent for it so I can stay on top of it for next year.

Celsius is the best post-emergent herbicide.

Specticle the most effective pre-emergent herbicide. Prodiamine (Barricade) or Dithopyr (Dimension) pre-emergents are not effective against it. Must apply the pre-emergent by mid-April -1st of May as it is a later germinating annual weed, with a follow up application of pre-emergent by mid-July/early August.

Yes I have Doveweed issue as well.

Is specticle only sold as granular? You apply this twice or only as second application

Spectacle Flo is the liquid but it’s hard to find in non commercial sizes. At least for me.

Specticle is expensive. The granular will cost roughly $6 per 1000 sq ft, the liquid (Flo) roughly $2 per 1000 sq ft. 18 oz bottle of Specticle Flo at Site One was $254 this past March. Bottle should last 3 to 4 years if applied at labeled rates to a 10,000 square lawn.

Recommendation to me by Dr. Ron Strahan, weed and turf specialist, LSU AgCenter, for Doveweed control was to apply it twice, mid-April/early May, with a follow up application in about 3 months. Doveweed seeds germinate at soil temps of about 70 F +.

What is your yearly pre-emergent routine?

Started 4 or 5 years ago using a granular Dimension (dithopyr) application around mid-Feb and mid-Sept. worked/works find - no issues, no complaints. Did/does a great job.

A couple years ago I switched to Prodiamine for Fall application, sticking with Dimension in mid-Feb. Prodiamine was primarily a cost saver - not seeing any discernible difference in efficacy between Dimension and Prodiamine, both are fine.

Now, b/c of significant Doveweed issues in the lawn that neither Dimension or Prodiamine address, I’ve added Specticle Flo.

So my current plans

Fall, mid- to late-Sept, Specticle Flo
Late winter, mid-Feb, Prodiamine
Late Spring, mid- to late-April, Specticle Flo (target Doveweed)

I do have Simazine I can use in fall and winter and have used some for Poa as a post-emergent that escaped the fall pre-emergent application. I might consider a mid-July/early August application of Specticle as a follow up for doveweed depending on weather (rainfall conditions) - need to discuss that with Dr. Strahan, not sure at this point if 4 applications of pre-emergent is excessive - I want his advice on this.

I’ve had a late season surge of doveweed and buttonweed. Nice mix of white and purple flowers. About to try and whack it again.

That’s what I’m gonna try this year but with granular. Dove weed is my main concern also. Hoped it will make a dent.
