Anyone got experience with elevator installation on existing homes?

I’d like to get ballpark on equipment cost and installation.

Are you asking about an interior or exterior elevator?

Champagne elevators

We've used them in 3 new and one retrofit. Easy to work with and no complaints from any of the homeowners.

30K for new construction basic install. Too many unknowns to guesstimate remodel. Available power? Up fits for code? Structural support?

I guess it would be considered exterior as it would be installed on an outside wall of the house. It’s not for me btw. I’m still strong enough to go up stairs.

I told a neighbor that I’d look into it as she’s getting up in age and wants to install something. I think it makes sense to put it on the side of her house vs trying to shoe horn it inside.

She says that her neice’s husband would install it for relatively cheap but I’m not sure if he knows what cheap means of even if he knows what he’s doing.

Nonetheless, She needs a benchmark to gauge price and some info in types of elevator- the good, bad and in between. My google searches say to expect @20,000 for the elevator. Installation has to be plus 10,000 but I really don’t know.

Sounds very pricey. Consider installing an escalator instead?

Exterior lifts require a good bit of maintenance. When my grandparents got older my grandfather looked into an exterior lift for their camp. He ended up going with 2 separate runs of stair chairs. He was a retired architect still doing projects for the camp and St. Thomas More until his stroke. He always did plenty of research so I would look into other options and keep an exterior elevator or lift on the back burner.

Didn't move too fast and when all of the olds would get together it was a bit of an ordeal but it moved them safely. These stairs are about 5' wide on both runs so with the seats flipped up they weren't too noticeable even though they didn't blend with the style of stairs. After a while you just didn't notice them until you used them or a grand/great grandkid started messing with them.

Some friends of my parents had an elevator in their house when I was a kid back in the 70’s.

Only went up 1 floor but it was cool as hell riding that thing as a kid.

This was in Mamou of all places.

Interesting.

We don't do a lot of residential but I know one of my coworkers did one with an elevator a couple years ago. Didn't look at that project much but I'm thinking it was a retrofit. I'll see if I can find information, OP.

My dad has one in his townhouse. He bought the place back in 2012, and the units were only a few years old. It is just between 2 floors, and has a normal looking door on the outside, which has to be closed before it operates, and the old metal sliding gate inside has to be latched into place as well. The doors have an autolock so that the door only opens on the floor that the car is on. Just safety features so that someone can't fall into the shaft or be in the shaft while it is operating. It even has a phone inside, so I guess if it malfunctioned you could call for help.

He's had a few issues with it over the years, nothing major but a control board went out one time, and another time it just needed some maintenance on the cables/rollers. Something got out of line and it wouldn't work until they were realigned.

When he moved in, he said he rarely ever used it. But now that he's getting older with some back problems, he uses it going up but rarely going down. Of course all his grandkids love riding in it, even though it takes about 20 seconds to just go up 10 feet.

They installed ours in the mid 80s and have serviced it since installation. Good company, I’ve never had a complaint. I have them out every two or three years to check everything out.

els lifts

Recommended this company a couple weeks ago to someone. My dad had his installed, and a few of his neighbors as well, and they are pretty maintenance free. Pretty simple designs out of aluminum. Install was a couple thousand dollars.

My Grandmaw has one on her house in Chauvin. It's considered a cargo elevator so it doesnt have to have an annual inspection, she still used it like a regular elevator. Her house is 12' off the ground

So the hope is that the elevator can be enclosed while still being on the outside of the house. Guessing that’s not a problem with the ones being posted

Ours is inside the house towards the center of the house, and the elevator shaft was framed out during construction. We had to make a 4 to 6-inch pit in the slab so the car would be level with the floor on the first floor. Ours is from inclinator and is similar to this LINK but with the old 80s style cab.

I would guess you could have an addition or bump out added for the elevator. Going to raise the cost though.
