We have a 6’ privacy fence, treated wood, right at 10 years old.

behind our house is a drainage ditch which is dry most of the year. After the ditch is a grown up property, no neighbors behind us. See birds and rabbits back here all the time.

The fence in the backyard is probably 5 yards or so in front of our actual property line, before the ditch.

We put a gate to access the back, have our compost pile back there, planted a couple of cypress trees, and keep the vegetation maintained.

Since there aren’t any neighbors behind us and we enjoy the nature back there, I’ve been brainstorming ideas to make it more visible.

Can’t remove this section completely since we need it to keep our dogs and kids inside the yard. Was thinking of removing the fence boards and replacing with shorter pickets. The problem I see is not being able to remove the boards without breaking the majority of them. (I’d be interested in saving them to repurpose for garden beds and other projects).

The second horizontal support piece/2x4 is 42” high - thinking about cutting the fence boards flush with this. The posts and horizontal 2x4’s are on the outside of our yard.

Question is if i were to do that, I’m wondering if I should put another piece of wood either on the inside where I made this cut and/or a piece of wood on top - both would be for aesthetics as I’m thinking just cutting the fence boards straight across and doing nothing else may look bad.

The current fence boards were fastened with a nail gun, not screws I could easily back out.

One other positive to shortening the fence would be less surface area for hurricane winds to catch and damage (this section runs east and west, is on the north part of our lot and delta messed it up where I had to reset each post). It’s 90’ long.

Pickets would be less expensive and I think easier for me to replace that cattle panels, but I’m brainstorming other possibilities before diving in.

I went with a picket fence at my old house so wecould keep the view of the bayou but keep our kids out of the bayou.

But currently I’m really liking these cattle panel fences. I’ll link one being discussed on this board.

This is pretty common for lake houses. Just google 6' fence to 4' fence transition and you will see all kinds of options.

I don’t see a problem with what you’re thinking .
Cut at 42 add a rough cut 2x8 cca on top. You could take out every other board to to open it up if they come off fairly easy. If that’s to big of hole just rip some down to a 2-3” and add it back to give it a different look .

I'm seeing more and more fencing with horizontal balusters
using wire cable 4" o/c. The use of those gives you an unobstructed view of everything off a deck or through a fence line.

Seeing plenty of the cattle grid as well.

And I travel the entire state of Alabama doing inspections for insurance companies.

This looks even better when you rip those fence boards in half. Also for the transition, don’t go straight, make it sort of like a sine curve, looks better…
