Honda mower won't reverse

Self propelled push mower. Replaced all the wheels, front and rear. Placed rear whells back on and gear is now locked going in reverse. Am I going to have to take the entire hub and gear box apart now?

Mine did the same thing. There is a spring loaded key on the axle, that "clicks" with the one way gear/sprocket. Replace the gears, springs, keys. I also changed all the bushings and washers as the parts were inexpensive.
ETA: You will need a pair of snap ring pliers. Buy new snap rings. You don't need to open the rear "differential" but you will need to loosen the mount.
Go here to get a parts list/diagram by model.

Then buy the parts here:

I’m assuming you mean it won’t pull in reverse right? It doesn’t have a reverse gear I mean? So if you pull it backwards the wheel locks up?
If you took it apart and it won’t go back after putting it back together odds are didn’t assemble it correctly.

Not sure what model you have but Honda HHR has a service bulletin (107) on this: Rear wheels locking up when pulling backwards. The problem is associated with rear wheel adjuster bushings which need to be replaced. I’ve had it repaired twice under warranty and it looks like I’m having a problem again. The service techs have stated it’s ridiculous that Honda wasn’t come up with a better solution to fix this problem permanently. LINK
Good number of YouTube videos on the repair.

It may not be that bushing. I thought mine was the axle/bushing at first but the gear/key is a problem too.

Thanks, its a HRR... but I assume I am in for a similar job, which is more than I thought I was getting into with just replacing a couple wheels.

Thanks for that info - I’ll look into that, b/c replacing the bushing, which supposedly, have been upgraded to “permanently” fix the issue is not working. I’m finding the repair seems to only last one season before the rear wheel begin to lock up when you pull the mower backwards. Cut grass a week ago, and I noticed the rear wheels starting to lock up when pulling the mower backwards and and the bushings were replaced last May.

Mine did the same thing. After repeated attempts to correct this, I was able to cut a deal with Honda to upgrade to the model with the fiberglass deck and a five year warranty. No problem with this one. I think that Honda realizes that this issue is a widespread problem. Get past lower management and speak to someone in authority at their headquarters.
